Shenmue to remain Dreamcast exclusive

The game is too specialised to move platform. Straight from the horses mouth.

In a recent interview, Sega of America President Peter Moore, spoke about how he saw the future for Yu Suzuki’s incredible Shenmue series. It’s good news for Dreamcast owners, as Moore openly doubts the possibilities of porting the series. Read on.

“I wasn’t kidding when I said Shenmue 2 was best suited for the Dreamcast,” said Moore. “Because, while I don’t think we can show you today, Charlie and I saw Shenmue 2 running on Dreamcast last week and it blew me away. Yu-san will tell you that now he’s finding things in the Dreamcast hardware and pushing the envelope that he never did with Shenmue and it’s stunning, it’s absolutely stunning. But in doing that, you’ve gone so far with Dreamcast it’s not a question of a straight port to another platform, because he is in his fourth year working on (sic). So you know you just can’t just port that straight over and get the same effects or even enhanced effects. While we all laugh when we say Shenmue looks best on Dreamcast, the way it works out right now, with the way he’s built that engine for the Dreamcast, the way the textures and the lighting work, and how he’s built that game, I don’t know if you can replicate that right now as a straight port on another platform.” Phew!

Peter Moore, known in the games industry as a straight-talking man of integrity, is apparently hoping that the Dreamcast userbase will be able to support the series for at least the next one or possibly two outings of Ryo and his quest for vengeance.
