Still a long way to catch Nintendo's 9 million Wii's though.

Sony Sells Over 4 Million PS3s In Japan
Sony’s PlayStation 3 has sold over 4 million units in Japan since its launch on 11th November 2006, according to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain. Well, 4,020,563 units if you want to be precise.

In December last year, sales stood at only 2.6 million units. PS3 sales during 2009 benefited from a combination of price cutting and the release of the PS3 Slim. However, Sony's console still has a lot of catching up to do in order to match the Wii’s lifetime sales in the country. Nintendo's unit amassed 9,048,012 units since 2nd December 2006. Wii sales stood at 7.5 million at the same time last year.

Now that Final Fantasy XIII has landed, we wonder how much higher PS3 sales will climb come next December.

Ermmm, either there's some mis-typed figures, or someone's maths is wonky.

So, in December 2008 the PS3 had sold 2.6m in just over 2 years, for ease we take that as approximately 1.3m per year. It's now just passed 4m, so roughly 1.4m this year; so, where is this 2/3 coming from? It's sold just over 1/3 of its total sales in this last year, considering that it's been three years that's not exactly anything special.

As for the Wii, that's sold a further 1.5m this year, so effectively the PS is even further behind than before, even with an increase in sales.

It seems like some people need to figure out that catching up does not mean the same thing as not falling behind by as much as before, which is what's really happening, based on those numbers.
