Quick timeline before we get into the story of Sony's new take on expanding PlayStation Network to cover other devices.December 2007: "High on (Sir Howard Stringer's) agenda is a plan to upgrade the PlayStation Network to enable great connectivity between the PlayStation 3 and other devices."
March 2008: "Sony is "working on many other avenues to deliver downloaded content," like the PlayStation Network which will be "spread that over the next year or so to many other products of Sony."
June 2009: "Hirai says the new service will overlay the backbone of the PlayStation Network but will be broader and more open. The service would make easier such things as putting images from a camera on TV, displaying and editing video, sharing with friends, and storage. Brand loyalists would be rewarded with incentives like discounts and premium services."
And now... "Kazuo Hirai, executive vice-president for networked products and services, said the service would be based on Sony's PlayStation Network." That service is the Sony Online Service announced yesterday. When does Kaz want it to launch, "Earlier in the year would be a lot more preferable," he told
Businessweek. He explained, "“It’s not just access content, stream it, and enjoy. What are your friends watching right now? There’s a screen that says all the programming that’s available. It highlights all the things that your friends are watching, for example. It’s a community experience."
And it's going to take on competing device manufacturers because, "Take LG or Samsung. They have some great devices. No services."
Ouch.
