Without even realising it, Activision has entered Modern Warfare 2 into the unofficial 'Cultural Phenomenon Comp', instigated back in May 2008 by Nintendo and Microsoft - without either of them realising they'd done it. Here's how Activision/Blizzard did it thanks to CEO Mike Griffith,"The
Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium."
He was commenting after more numbers were released for sales, "across the globe, including over 10,000 retail outlets in the U.S. alone which held midnight openings to meet consumer demand. In its first day, the blockbuster title sold through approximately 4.7 million copies in just North America and the United Kingdom, according to internal Activision estimates."
That said, we're sure
Michael Pachter is going to tell Mike Griffiths that he's wrong.
The other contenders in the CPC are:
Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway with: "
Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon".
And...
Bill Gates, once of Microsoft, with: "
Halo is truly a cultural phenomenon, and the launch of Halo 3 is an important milestone for Xbox 360 and for video games as entertainment and as an art form".
So, what do you think? Are any or all of these worthy of winning the CPC? To the Forum!
