Sony's Hirai: We're not in the Hardware Business
What with the recent release of the PS3 Slim and the forthcoming releases of the PSP Go and the new Motion Controller, it may have passed through your mind that Sony is a maker of hardware. Not so.

Speaking in a recent interview, Kaz Hirai, president of the Networked Products & Services Group, made the bold and bald statement, "We are not in the hardware business but the entertainment business."

Yes, we were a bit shocked by that as well. However, all is not lost on the hardware front. Kaz also mentioned that, "We think we need to make much of the profitability of the PS3 platform as a whole, including hardware, software and peripherals".

We don't support problem gambling... but we're putting 50p on Kaz being the next Sony CEO by the way.

They better hope they are. No hardware, no games on the hardware, or entertainment. To prove my point, try replacing all Sony game systems with a basic commodore 64 clone, and see how far it gets. The hardware enables the entertainment, so unless you stop designing, licensing, contracting, selling and making hardware, you will always be a hardware company to some extent. But then again, I had more fun on the Vic-20 then I ever did on the PS2 or 3 (though I don't own or really use a 3, but going on the little I have seen, the games are mostly a spectacle and a chore, even outdone by indie freeware and shareware I perceive). Oh, for xbox like indie development to save the day.
