Remember the outrageous US PS3 advert that so offended innocent video games news sites and bloggers? You don't?
It's here. Well, now it has drawn the ire of the Nigerian government.
The government of that august and mighty nation has taken umbrage at the following sentence from the frankly humorous advertisement: "You can't believe everything you read on the Internet otherwise I'd be a Nigerian millionaire by now."
A report in Nigerian newspaper,
The Nation (we're not saying it's in the thrall of the Nigerian government... definitely not) states that, "The advertisement currently circulating on youtube.com and facebook.com and other international websites creates the impression that Nigerians hardly do genuine business."
it then prints a statement by Information and Communication Minister Prof Dora Akunyili, "It is on record that Sony Corporation has operated in Nigeria since independence and has enjoyed tremendous patronage from Nigerians at home and abroad.
"Over these years, there is no established record that the company has recorded any major fraud by Nigerians."
"While Nigeria accepts that there are few criminal-minded people within her population like any other country including Japan, the home country of Sony Corporation, the Federal Government has put in place institutions to rid the country of fraudulent practices."
Sense of humour fail? Or massive conspiracy by Sony to bring down the entire Nigerian government?
