Firmware update 3.0 is available to download and install to the PS3 now. We know, because we downloaded it already.
The update comes just in time for the launch of the PS3 Slim, which hits shops today.
The feature Sony's been trumpeting the most is the 'What's New' section on the XMB. It also adds a pretty sparkly effect to the XMB, which is nice. There's a fuller list of features here. If you can't be arsed sifting through that, have a look at the video below.

I was up at the time of release (it was 03:50 when I checked for it) and was instantly blown away by the bigger lettering and the fact it blurs the background in sub menus to make it easier to read
