Earlier we reported on Sony's first quarter financials in which figures for both PS3 and PSP were mentioned - there was not mention of the ageing PS2. Well, the PlayStation 2 outsold both the PS3 and the PSP in the financial quarter ending June 30th.
While the PS3 sold 1.1 million units, and the PSP shifted 1.3 million, 1.6 million PS2s were sold. That's an increase on the 1.5 million PS2s sold in the same period last year.
Curiously, Sony didn't actually mention the PS2 figure in its earnings report - the information's tucked away on its corporate site
here.
Why would Sony overlook the fact that one of its platforms had outsold its previous year sales? A lack of joined-up thinking? An oversight? Or because relying on Last Gen sales makes your current generation of hardware's under-performance even more ingloriously than it is?
It occurred to SPOnG that the fact people were still buying PlayStation branded hardware - albeit a generaion-old, means that price could be a factor. We had the brilliant idea that maybe Sony should cut the price of the PS3! Wonder if Sony's thought of that...
