The video for U2’s latest single
I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight is premièring on the PlayStation Network's VidZone in the UK as we write. This is exclusive as it is prior to its August 17th release on Mercury Records.
This is, of course, a big deal for the PlayStation given that such a video would usually get at least an hour's worth of documentary on Channel 4.
It might also make a certain Robert Kotick take a quick look at PlayStation 3 and think, "Oh, U2 exclusive? That's quite impressive", and therefore re-examine his threat to
withdraw support from the platform.
Why?
U2's UK label is Mercury Records, which is owned by the Universal Music Group. UMG is owned by Vivendi SA, which owned Vivendi Games and therefore Blizzard, both of which merged with Activision to form Activision Blizzard. The CEO of Activision Blizzard is Robert Kotick. The majority shareholder in Activision Blizzard is... Vivendi SA.
Possibly the top folks at Sony had a quick word with the top people at Vivendi SA?
Or, in the current state of mass media, the Mercury Records PR folk thought, "Blimey those video games things are good with their Sonic the Plumber! They speak to U2 fans, and telly is rubbish. Let's get Bono and the lads on PlayStation like what the Beatles are!"
