In a sensible bid for the future, Sony is planning to release a PlayStation dev kit into universities. While price has not been stated, we expect these to be less expensive than the
kits currently available to pro' developers. SCEE R&D's Sarah Lemarie told attendees at the Develop Conference in Brighton today that, "I have exciting news. We have started a PS3 Academic Development Programme, and we're referring to the dev kits as mini-dev kits, which I can best described as being in a closed beta stage at present. We'll be opening this beta up slowly".
Develop mag quotes Lemarie as steering students away from a pure Linux environment. She says, "Of course universities can use Linux to program on the PS3 but I would really strongly recommend that if you are interested in the PS3 you look into this, as the experience you will get over Linux is quite incredible."
The mini-dev kit is a consumer-sized PS3 with a full SDK; the PhyreEngine engine will also be included in the academic program.
Having stated that, "It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation",
recently, maybe Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick, might want to give the AcademaDevs the once over.
