Exclusive: Heavy Rain Not 'In line' with Trophies

But support is coming

Posted by Staff
Guillaume de Fondaumiere, co-CEO of Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream, has told SPOnG that his company's game is not necessarily "conceptually in line" with the PS3's Trophy system.

"We haven’t figured out, as of yet, how the trophy system is going to work. It’s not necessarily a game that is conceptually in line with what trophies should do", Guillaume told SPOnG at the GameHorizon conference.

"Again, it’s not about succeeding or failing. It’s not about doing the right thing or doing the wrong thing. It’s about the journey. The journey is the most important thing. So, to a certain degree, I would say we’re not rewarding the players in a conventional way. The reward is the emotional experience, is how good the story is from the player’s perspective.

"I guess it should be the other way around. It should be gamers giving us trophies (grins) rather than us giving players trophies!"

Don't worry, though. Quantic Dream isn't about to turn the whole trophy system on its head. "But we’ll of course support trophies and we’re trying to find the right way to integrate trophies into the game", Guillaume went on.

For more from Guillaume, check back on SPOnG for the full interview soon.

It can't be that hard to figure out O_o Since the game is about not dieing, why not have trophies for surviving with all 4 characters etc? Or for surviving certain secret enemy encounters? Seems pretty straight forward imo.

I actually like the way their talking about it. I'm tired of games that give you trophies for beating a certain mission, or something of the sort. I'd like to see some really interesting trophies in this one. Trophies that I feel good earning.

Well, if Heavy Rain is a story-based game with multiple story branches then I say award a Trophy for every branch a player goes through. Then, when the story ends, the player will feel motivated to experience a different story from the beginning, making different decisions than the ones they did during their first playthrough.

Can you pass this idea to Quantic Dream? :)

Has anyone played the first ratchet and clank game? If so the skill point system was much like the trophy system, accept the skill points were creative and fun. Thats how every trophy game should be!

This sort of implies that there is a consistent way of implementing trophies in existing games. Which is very far from teh truth of course. The reality is, developers give you a trophy for whatever they feel like, and Quantic Dream will be able to do exactly the same.

You walked along this corridor, have "Cross Tied Walker" trophy.

You pressed the X button a lot of times, have an "X-Wing Fighter" trophy.
