HMV is heading up a new - consumer friendly - games event, dubbed 'Game On! London!' down in... yes, London, this June.
The company is teaming up with UKeSA, which styles itself as the official governing body for competitive gaming in the UK. UKeSA will organise the event, while HMV will 'headline' it (e.g. sponsor it). The event is described as a "consumer-facing gaming expo and eSports event".
The two organisations hope to attract some 25,000 gamers to the event, which is scheduled for 20th – 21st June, 2009 at London's Olympia Exhibition Centre.
As well as showing off new games and tech, the event will host the Dell XPS Premiership Season One finals, which will see various esports teams duking it out.
“We’re doing our utmost with UKeSA to make the event financially viable to the industry – we all know belts are necessarily tightening, but the consumers are still out there”, Tim Ellis, head of games at HMV, told
MCV.
“It will be the first opportunity after E3 for anyone to see publisher inventory, and it’s also before Cologne, so there’s potentially an opportunity here to finally develop a UK event at the right place and at the right time”, said UKeSA chief executive Ray Mia.
Last year
Play.com held a large scale consumer event at Wembley Stadium, but it seems to have dropped off the radar for this year.
SPOnG, for its part, is glad to see someone taking another pop at a large consumer show in the UK. We would, however, like to see the names of some publishers on board. None have been named so far.
