The British Academy Video Games Awards (game BAFTAs) nominations are in ahead of the ceremony on March 10th with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare leading the pack.
Infinity Ward's shooter is just ahead of GTA IV (six nominations), Fable II (five) and LittleBigPlanet (five).
CoD4, GTA IV and Fable II are all up for Action & Adventure, Story & Character and Best Game. CoD4 is also up for Artistic Achievement, Gameplay, Multiplayer and Use of Audio, while GTA IV got nominated for Gameplay, Use of Audio and Technical Achievement and Fable II got recognised with nominations for Original Score and Technical Achievement. LittleBigPlanet got nominated for Artistic Achievement, Casual, Original Score, Technical Achievement and Use of Audio.
Other front runners include Assassin’s Creed, Dead Space and Fallout 3 - each with four nominations - and Gears of War 2, Rock Band and Super Mario Galaxy, which each landed three nominations.
Tricia Brennan of GAME, which sponsors the award, said "Gaming is now for everyone and we believe the shortlist reflects this - so whatever age you are, we want to know what your favourite game from the list is."
The Academy was keen to name drop Steven Spielberg thanks to his EA collaboration, Boom Blox, having been nominated in the Casual category.
The majority of categories are voted on by industry figures, but the GAME Award of 2008 is open to public voting. In that rather nebulous category are Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, GTA IV, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Left 4 Dead, LittleBigPlanet, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Wii Fit and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. Voting is now live over here.
Anne-Marie Flynn, head of awards at BAFTA uttered, "The great thing about the GAME Award shortlist is that it reflects the real diversity of games capturing the public's imagination. After some very heated debate the panel decided upon these ten great games and now the public has the chance to have their say. All will be revealed at the Awards ceremony on March 10th."
