iSupply: Sony to Re-spin PS3 Hardware
iSupply has released details regarding how much it now costs to make a PlayStation 3. It also has predictions for the future of the console. Starting with cost...

Unsurprisingly it's less than it cost in 2006.

Back then, the original $499 model set Sony back $805 to make. You may notice that we're not converting dollars to pounds here due to the passage of time making such a conversion largely pointless. Anyway... today the $399 model costs the company $448.73.

iSupply also - and again unsurprisingly - agrees with president of SCEE, David Reeves who recently pointed out that the PS3 will break even in 2009.

BusinessWeek also quotes iSupply analyst Andrew Rassweiler as stating, "When it was first released, the PS3 sported a total of 4,048 different parts, including those in the handheld controllers. Now, that number has come down by about 30%, to 2,820."

Two components are used as examples of the cost reduction since 2006. The Cell cost $89 in 2006, now it costs Sony $46. Nvidia's graphic handling Reality Synthesizer came in at $129 in 2006. Sony can pick one up at $58 now. Both have also dropped in size from 90nanometer to 65nanometer.

Rasweiller also delivers quite a prediction and one that we assume will only come true after break-even. He states, "Sony is one step ahead of us and probably has plans to re-spin the hardware to reduce the costs yet again".

Let's see when that makes it to retail.
