Xbox 360: Europe vs EMEA Sales

Where in the world is Europe

An Xbox 360 - well, it's near enough to one isn't it? Like Europe and Africa.
An Xbox 360 - well, it's near enough to one isn't it? Like Europe and Africa.
The world is a big place, but at least we usually know where Europe is in relation to, for example, Africa - but right now, we're a tiny bit confused.

Microsoft has just let it slip in an email regarding various pieces of research it has carried out showing that families would all benefit from playing with Xbox 360s this Xmastide that, "To date, we have sold 7 million consoles in Europe and recently enjoyed our biggest sales week ever. Our trend research shows that families are looking for gifts that keep on giving throughout the year".

Best-selling week ever! Superb stuff there from Neil Thompson. Neil, according to Microsoft "has overall responsibility for Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division in Northern Europe (UK, Ireland & Nordics)", so he should know.

But hold on a second...earlier this month, Microsoft's David Gosen's (see his job title at the foot of this piece) announced that: "We’re in a position now where we’ve sold over seven million consoles in EMEA, which puts us in a fantastic place versus PlayStation 3".

In case you don't know, EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

David's job, according to Microsoft, is vice president of Strategic Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business EMEA, so he should know.

So, we've asked Microsoft to let us know whether the seven million have been sold in Europe or in Europe, the Middle East and Africa - because we don't like being confused.

Having asked, we were assured, "In case of console numbers it’s 7m in EMEA."

Phew.

Microsoft's Bios of Gosens and Thompson
