Reggie Fils-Aime, president and CEO of Nintendo of America, has said that the US won't get the
recently-announced DSi until, "Well into calendar year 2009."
Continuing strong sales of the DS Lite were cited as the reason for the delay. On the upside, Reggie said that more Wiis will be shipped to the US over the Christmas period than last year.
The DSi is set to launch on November 1st in Japan, while SPOnG has been told that the device will be released in "Spring 2009" in Europe.
The revelation that American gamers will have a wait on their hands for the new hardware came from the Nintendo Media Summit held in the US, where a couple of other interesting snippets emerged.
Cammie Dunaway, executive vice president for Nintendo of America's sales and marketing, revealed that Club Nintendo, the company's loyalty scheme, is heading to the US.
She also announced the Wii Speak Channel, a dedicated service for the Wii Speak peripheral. Wii Speak, if you haven't come across it before and can't guess from its name, will offer online voice chat for the Wii for folk in up to four different locations or, as the old folks might call it, a four-way conference call.
It also emerged that the first couple of titles to land on DSware, the new online software store for the DSi, will be the two
Brain Training titles, "re-tooled" for the new service.
The new SD card features, that will enable gamers to download WiiWare and Virtual Console titles directly to external storage, were also given another mention.
