Let's see if the price cuts go beyond

Microsoft Offers Nintendo a Fight via Woolworths
Although Microsoft in the UK might officially have no Xbox 360 price cuts in mind (at least not according to what it's told us), that hasn't stopped Woolies hacking cash from the range of 360s.

According to a mole (or some other kind of surreptitious animal) who passed an image to Engadget, the High Street retailer is to bring the price of the Arcade Xbox 360 down from £160 to £129.99. Yup, below the Wii's pricing by quite a margin and just in time for Xmas or whatever we're calling the 'The Holidays' this year.

Not to be left out, the Premium drops from £200 to £169.99, and the Elite plummets from £260 to £229.99. Both leaving the PS3 rather exposed.

Whether this is officially Microsoft sanctioned or whether it is simply Woolworths trying to clear inventory so it can fill shelves with Wiis, we are trying to find out.

The full image can be found at Engadget.

Its most certainly going to be a price drop, and like usual Woolworths hasnt got a clue about keeping secrets, i also like how they reg. sell new release games on a wedensday before the friday launch.

Well the Arcade pack is definently a huge bargain and a contender to the Wii, however the price difference between the Premium and the Elite is not really worth the extra. The Elite should be £199.99.

i do not think the elite is needed i mean iv got 144 arcade games many dlc and loads of game saves and i am still at 71 gb free i think that there will be a official price drop befor end of the year but all so think that the ps3 will get one in there as well but i do not think it will do that much as i think this year the wii is going to do the same as the last 2 with things like wii fit being out
i all so thing that as more people are getting hd tvs the ps3 will do very well as if you speek to most people thinking about getting br thay all ways come out with if i buy a ps3 i get br and so much more for less a price than getting a stand alone br player

Agreed,

The Elite is redundant, all 360`s come with HDMI, 60GB is all you really need at present, and Charging extra for colour is Apples iTrick, Ive had my Premium since Xmas 2006 and had one RROD bought a 120GB cheapo and have no need for all that storage again have around 40 arcade games, 10-15 demos (because im too lazy for deleting, also Pure is awesome), couple of movies in HD and loads of DLC but nowhere near the 60GB mark yet,

I am hoping for a price drop, as my daughter is a Viva Piñata freak and looking forward to Lip`s and Banjo so I will be getting one for her at xmas,
As for PS3 it makes good sense to get them for BD playback, I have one in the lounge and recently got one for £150.00 (off a thick mate) which I have just put in the Bedroom on my smaller yet just as pretty HDTV but I can use it for media streaming (which is far superior to 360 media streaming), my son wants one now for his room, as I am on the 3rd collection (VHS> DVD>BD) of Disney Movies, so I’m thinking well xmas is where they get the goods (rest of the year is we will see!) so that will make a 3rd in the house, and as I replace remaining CRT`s around the home with HDTV`s I will also awaiting a £150.00 PS3 to replace DVD players in respected rooms, it’s a bit diff this time, with the PS2, DVD Players were affordable in comparison to a PS2 but this time a PS3 is the cheaper so it makes sense for people to get a PS3 for each room rather than a BD Player , it would be good if a slim line PS3 could come out for my selfish purposes only as well,

Hm, something tells me this is quite a dangerously low offer. Remember, consecutive price cuts can sometimes signal a lack of value/worth for the Average Joe consumer. Just look at the Gamecube - both when it was £130 and when retailers decided to slash it to £80 temporarily, from which the console never recovered from its perception of 'cheap' and 'unworthy' value.

If this is a premature official price cut, Microsoft may as well be rid of the Arcade and Elite/Pro versions and just have one SKU, set for the same price range as the Wii (~£169). Having an Arcade model so close to the sub-£100 price range gives an air of desperation over the SKU, surely.

The PS3 is maybe the most future proofed Bluray player out there. And as it's the best known, and most common, it's probably going to have less problem hand shaking over HDMI. Also when I was speaking to a Hi-Fi and AV installer who has used to either Pioneer or Panasonic Bluray players (I can’t remember which) said “that the novel thing about the PS3 was that you put a disc in, and it played, strait away.” Whereas he, was used to players taking a few minutes from switch on
To conclude; The PS3 is good value as a Bluray and up scaling DVD player, but maybe a bit lacking in value if you just want to Game, hence, quite a few “thick mates” selling their PS3s.

PS The “Thick mate” in question wasn’t SS4, was it?
