Demographictastic: PlayStation 3 to Pimp Music Videos

Is it shameless self-promotion?

More PS3 news spills forth from Leipzig, this time telling us that Sony plans to offer streamed music videos through the PS3. Not just any kind of streamed music videos, either - free streamed music videos.

The service will be launched in PAL territories in early 2009 on a trial basis. It will be accessible via the XMB and will enable users to put together their own playlists with artists ranging from Hannah Montana to Hawkwind (not to mention other parts of the alphabet).

"Trial basis"? This either means that SCEE will pull the service if PS3 owners don't bother with it, or before too long it will be charged for. Mark SPOnG has contacted Sony to discover the answer - and also to discover how long the trial is for.

The service will also enable users to watch the videos through their PSPs using Remote Play. They will also be downloadable to mobile phones for "a small fee".

This comes as a result of a partnership with VidZone, a company that already offers streamed music videos over t'Internet.

The service will be separate to the upcoming video and music download store for the PS3. Of that, Sony said, "SCEE will be launching a comprehensive film, TV and music download service at a later date."

This might not come as much of a surprise to you, however, if you were paying attention to the activities of Sony BMG Music Entertainment UK last June. The record label inked a deal with VidZone to give it access to Sony BMG's digital catalogue, which includes the likes of Justin Timberlake, Westlife and Beyonce.

Looking at VidZone's more recent history, Microsoft got there first. Earlier in the month it emerged that VidZone signed a deal with Microsoft to offer its services via MSN Video and Messenger TV.

Belligerent cynicism about the fact that Sony is effectively launching a service that will pimp its own wares aside, however, it'll be nice and convenient to watch the videos we want to watch without trawling through 30-odd music channels or sitting in front of YouTube.
