Highly original Sky Surfer tweaked for European release.

Sometimes the localisation process delivers gaming fruit.

Imagine the pure adrenaline rush of throwing yourself from a plane 7,000 feet above the ground. The intense fear you would feel as you freefall, watching the Earth come spiralling towards you. Then, someone thought it would be a good idea to strap a surfboard to his feet and sky surf back to ground zero. Sky Surfing is easily one of the most extreme sports out there and soon you will have the opportunity to try your hand at spiralling through the clouds on your PS2. Just pray that your parachute opens in time.

How Sky Surfer works is that you have a rotating globe that shows your relative position to the ground. You have to balance yourself into an upright stance and then you can enter key combinations to perform different moves and link them together for high-scoring combinations. It takes a bit of getting used to because the concept is so new, but when you get to grips with the game mechanics, Sky Surfer is a top-rate gaming experience.

The European version is being tweaked to include more multi-player features than its Japanese cousin. New are the two-player split-screen modes FreeStyling, Time Expansion and First Wins. The single player mode is a great way to learn the game, but it can’t compare to the fun of two-player battles. FreeStyling is where you have a limited amount of time to pull off the most spectacular moves, the player with the highest score wins. Time Expansion is where you have to pull off a selection of increasingly difficult tricks and the player that stays in the longest will be declared the winner. Finally, First Win is where you both have to pull off the same trick at the same time in a ‘fastest fingers’ first stage. Whoever is slower doesn’t earn any points for the trick.

The European Version of Sky Surfer boasts these new features, two new characters, new practice levels and new boards. Look out for Sky Surfer on the shelves in summer.
