Miyamoto: Nintendo Devs Uneasy About Wii Fit

Gaming guru Shigeru Miyamoto has said that younger developers at Nintendo felt uneasy with development of Wii Fit.

Speaking in an interview, he stated, "With younger game directors and designers, there's a tendency to look at the types of games that have come in the past -- how they can build on those experiences and enhance them. With Wii, we've felt a need to start from zero in a lot of places and create something entirely new."

He goes on to state what that meant for Wii Fit. "Of course, when you try to do that there tends to be a lot of uneasiness. It's a different way of designing than people are accustomed to. So in order to resolve a lot of that uneasiness and help the team feel more confident, I unfortunately needed to take a lead role and stand at the forefront of that process and help them realize that it really is OK to start from scratch and build from there."

You'll note that he said, "unfortunately" there. Is Miyamoto fed up of getting his hands dirty? It kind of sounds that way...

He also took a moment to try to reassure the hardcore. "Rather than the core gamer being concerned that we're abandoning them, I hope they'll realize that really what we're trying to do is to create a better environment for their hobby", he said.

The European release of Wii Fit is now just a week away. To get yourself ready, you can read what SPOnG's man in Japan thought of the game here.

I think calling gaming a hobby to the hardcore just sort showed that yes nintendo you are abandoning us, but i can live with with a casual console as long as i have alternatives liek say PS3 and 360, but is this uneasy comment a repeat of pretty much the same thing he said about the Wii itself?

I have come to think of it as more of a lifestyle. :-)

everytime i read interviews with miyamoto it sounds like with every new idea he really has to fight to convince his colleagues, especially the young whippersnappers below him. the wiimote, galaxy, and the wiifit board spring to mind. i think maybe his protege's arent running with the whole accessible games for everyone thing and hes getting a bit tired of being the originator of all the ideas and then having to guide it so much.

All he's saying here is he had to personally do a bit of hand-holding on this project, by taking a lead role he reassured those working on the project that it was both important and he lent some of his mystique (and...best way I can think to describe it is fortune, or luck)
