Microsoft Claims Xbox 360 Sales Doubled
Microsoft has released 'information' today regarding sales of the Xbox 360 in Europe. The headline it provided proclaims, 'XBOX 360 SALES DOUBLE IN EUROPE'.

We are then told, "The momentum behind Xbox 360 continues to grow, as Microsoft today announced that European sales have more than doubled in the wake of recent adjustments of the estimated retail price (ERP), solidifying its leadership position as the number one next-generation console in Europe and significantly broadening the console’s audience."

We refer you to March 14th when the prices on the Premium, Elite and Arcade models were all adjusted downwards (cut).

Okay, good news for Microsoft. So, what have the sales doubled to (and from) and over what period? Is this unit sales? Sales to consumers or to retail? Have they doubled since March 14th? Or since yesterday? We looked to the press release for numbers.

Chris Lewis, Vice President, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Europe (phew!) came to the fore, "Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today’s numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe.

"The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that’s appealing to everyone in the home, makes Xbox 360 the ultimate high-definition entertainment choice, and it’s clear that we’re already seeing this resonate with consumers."

Right, so... any figures here? For instance, how many sold and over what period? We read on...

"On Friday, 14th March, Microsoft lowered the ERP for its Xbox 360 family of consoles in Europe"...

Yes, we know that. How many have you sold and over what period?

"Upcoming releases of blockbuster games such as Grand Theft Auto IV, Rock Band, Lego Indiana Jones and Ninja Gaiden 2 will continue this momentum and give consumers even more reasons to buy Xbox 360."

This is starting to become a little tiresome and not a bit patronising...

"Xbox 360 is the number one next-gen console in EMEA, owning 42% of the market in terms of life-to-date revenue. Xbox 360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console in Europe with more than 7.0 games sold per console (PS3: 3.8; Wii 3.5) after 27 months on the market."

Brilliant! Two numbers. Where did these come from? By the way, 'EMEA' is the acronym for 'Europe, the Middle East and Africa' - not simply Europe.

We have, of course, contacted Microsoft in order to enable them to put all this bluster to rest with some actual figures and information.

I think what is more important is what developers are up to in regards to what stage they are at with games and what titles are on the way because to be perfectly all 3 systems are doing great.

PS3 is picking up the pace especially since blu-ray is the clear winner for HD movies.

Xbox 360 still is selling very well far far better than last gen thats for sure and has lots to offer in gaming and peripherals etc.

Wii is doing fantastic and developers from what I read recently on 1 or 2 games are going to be bringing out more impressive visuals since the gameplay is clearly there only needs beefing up in the visuals department.

Woah ! Nice way to back down from your catalogue of previous rants against the PS3. From Xbot to desperate diplomat, and no attempt to back up Microsoft's own spin on sales I see? Sony must be making huge strides.

Hey, at least the kid is trying...where do you get "desperate diplomat" from anyway? It appeared to me to be a fairly objective layout of the situation...

Or are you a PSleestack?

Bently, of all people, appears to have had some kind of moderating influence on the lad. I don't quite understand it myself...

The way I see this generation:

Wii: Clearly a "winner" at the moment, could "lose" tomorrow and would still be a "winner".
There's something to be said for being profitable AND popular. Could also be the foot in the door...Nintendo's next console could be, pun intended, the s**t. 'Course, they're equally likely to keep milking this one, OR making a dramaticlly innovative cock-up of the next.

360: Currently a "winner", problems aside, among "gamers", the current leader. Taken in context, hard to see it retiring as anything but a "winner". 'Nuff said.

PS3: Potential to come from behind and finish as both leader and overall "winner". Taken in context, currently not performing to expectations, it promises to do better next term, as more games come out and its BluRay victory has a chance to take full effect. Unlike the other two consoles, the PS3's future is less certain, but with greater potential upside...it also had further to fall.

Next generation...If Nintendo does stick with the Wii through this generation (no HD Wii or whatnot), they will likely lead off the next generation with their offering...regardless, MS will precede Sony to market again.

Interesting Questions:

Just how good will the PS3 be once devs sort out how to make it dance?

Will MS be able to steal some of the Wii's thunder with the 360'mote, becoming the "HD Wii" by default, and pushing into the casual demographic with XBLA?

Will it ultimately be the cost-driving, delay-causing, BluRay drive that propels the PS3 to the top?

Will Sony's "Open" PSN become the object of malicious exploits?

Whatever happened to the whole Sony-Immersion-MS legal wrangle?

2 lengths of string and a bottle cap good, or 2 bags of cheese and onion and a mars bar good (take that how your sub conscience wants too)
