GTA IV Set to Smash Halo 3 Record?

EA might like to reconsider its price?

Mike Hickey is a financial analyst who specialises in video gaming fortune-telling. He works for Janco Partners. Mike's got a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance-Real Estate from Colorado State University. Mike says that Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV is going to sell 5.8 million units in its first week on sale.

This is apparently, "nearly double the current record set by Halo 3 last year", according to a report in the New York Post. Bear in mind that, aside from quoting analysts, The Post is better known for running headlines such as the 1983 classic, "Headless Body in Topless Bar".

Also worth noting is that this is the same Janco Partners' Mike Hickey who, last month said, "Maybe the first week GTA IV sales won’t do what ‘Halo 3’ did, but I can almost guarantee they’ll probably outsell ‘Halo 3’ in the first year".

Hickey's analysis is based on "pre-sales of the game, anticipated shipments and other data" - we assume he means worldwide sales, because this is not made clear.

If, however, the 5m mark is achieved - or other analysts support that hard-numbered conclusion, then EA might like to reconsider its $26 (£13) per-share offer for Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive.

I love it when people state the obvious...

HALO 3 was ONLY sold on the Xbox 360, now if GTA 4 was a console exclusive I doubt they would be grinning about doing better than HALO 3.

GTA 4 is on multiple platforms Xbox 360, PS3 and I think PC as well? Even if only on the 2 consoles it will easily outsell Halo 3 in sales.

Halo 3 is the best selling game this generation on a SINGLE platform so far so lets see who can best that on a SINGLE platform not that I give a damn since Halo 2 and 3 were over rated and nowhere as good as HALO 1.

News headline..."GTA4 saves world economy from recession"

Lets try not to mention halo3 in the same article as GTA4 in future.

Ill Take that bet because we are talking about day one sales here! not lifetime.

and which console are you making this bet about? PS3 the user base isnt big enough Yet to compete with a halo 3 style sales, if 360 well most everyone who whos a 360 is a halo nut (note i said most) or PC (erm)

so when will you be handing your house keys over?

Exactly.

Also considering the kind of publicity Halo 3 got and the amount of videos, marketing, hype etc is sold s**t loads.

All in all I think GTA 4 will do extremely well in total sales but considering the userbase of the 360 is higher than the PS3 GTA4 will obviously sell more on the 360 not that I care I just want the game but its obvious.

Will Gta4 outsell Halo 3 ... of course.

Will Gta4 outsell Halo 3 after 1 year ... of course.

Will Gta4 outsell Halo 3 in its launch week ... doubt it.

Oblig : Halo 3 is crap

Gta4 is a better game then Halo 3... pretty much no doubt there, so it will be more popular. Eventually it will outsell it, just like Gta SA outsold Halo 2 ... but not in its launch week.

The only possible reason i could see for GTA4 outselling Halo 3 in its first week how much bigger the 360 install base is now... thanks to Halo 3.

The reasons i can see for it not outselling Halo 3 are, amongst others, lack of hype, 18 cert, and cost.

Halo 3 was cheap, hyped to hell and was like crack for the 13 year olds who bought it.

Gta4 will sell based on word of mouth after release. Only a fool buys a game before reviews, before anyone has played it.

1st week sales really aren't a good metric. It works for Movies in Cinemas, because they are only there for a short period but video games don't go to dvd.

so you agree that its a stupid bet.

Oblig : Your mom gives sloppy head.

Give credit where its due, Sony had at least as much to do with the 360's current position as Halo 3.

Yeah, NOBODY is going to buy GTA4 before they read the review *rolls eyes* ...GTA4 needs word of mouth like GT5 needs another delay...you know who buys games sight unseen? fanboys. You know what has a lot of fanboys? GTA. But I suppose you only apply that moniker to people who like games you don't.

Speaking of crack for 13 year olds...I'll pit the relative maturity of Halo players against GTA players any f**king day of the week, though they probably approach parity...

Any attempt at calculating the mass or quantity of both the halo 3 fanboys and gta fanboys at the same time would cause an integer overrun in the universe, it would then invert and obliterate itself.

I still think my point is valid. GTA isn't a day one seller, it's one of those games that just keeps selling. Halo 3 isn't one of those games that keeps on selling, it's one of those overhyped piece of crap that people buy because its the "thing" to do. People will buy Gta4 because it is the "thing" to buy as well, but not solely because of the hype and hysteria (hy words rock btw).

My young cousins, my brother and some of my friends who will buy Gta4 are utterly oblivious to it's impending release. If it was in October or November with a big Post E3 hype train of old ok maybe... it could. But it won't,

I was in GAME today and according to them if you haven't pre-ordered, you won't get a copy for a good few weeks. They could just be hyping it up to get the pre-orders on the books however who's to say that their claim that this GTA will be bigger than HALO3 and any of the other GTAs in the first week. You can also bet (but not a house) they'll use it shift a lot of PS3s and 360s and I think the masses that had a PS2 but don't look at any gaming info other than TV ad's and shop windows will take plunge (if not for GTA then when?). That said these people won't do a great deal for a consoles attach rate.

Oh of course you can't use maths...you have to rely on anecdotal evidence...

Stupidest things Halo fans do: Put vehicles in unlikely places, make big explosions.

Stupidest things GTA fans do: Pick up hooker, *&%$ said hooker for money (lather), kill hooker to get money back (rinse), repeat ad nauseam.

Coolest things Halo fans do: Red vs. Blue, Grifball, popularize a new art form.

Coolest things GTA fans do: OK, I got nothing...err, vehicle tricks?

RvB, ftw.

i couldn't agree more with supersaiyan. this is a dual platform game but we can still judge the xbox copies of gta iv and see how that does against halo. I loved halo but can't stand the sequels they were both massive let downs. happily rockstar have never allowed this complacency to stop them from progressing with their series.

well if it does double halo 3 in sales, then one of the platforms will sell more than halo 3 did on xbox??
