PlayStation Store Gets Overhauled

Technical issues to be fixed?

Posted by Staff
Sony has sent word confirming the long-rumoured upgrades to its PlayStation Store in PAL territories (we can't help but think it'll be all areas. The upgrades are due to hit in "mid-April", so just prior to GTA IV's April 29th launch then? The good news is that the re-vamp includes an "improved navigation system, much greater scope for categorisation" and as well as a "new user interface", the platform holder tells us.

The bad news is that new additions to the store will cease for two weeks while the work is carried out. Content from the back catalogue will still be available, however. We're told that we'll see a "special update" in mid-April.

Sony is keen to point out that PSN accounts and virtual wallets will be unaffected.

SPOnG hopes that the overhaul will bring with it some technical improvements in the back end, too. Last week GT5 Prologue was delayed as a download thanks to technical difficulties, while Sony had to contact numerous PlayStation Store users over a potential breach in security.

You can see some screenshots of what the new store will look like above and below.

Given that the store is just a kiosk website with a pretty small template footprint, it should take about a week to carry out the "overhaul" shown in these screens - why has this been on the cards for so long?

Personally, given the dearth of content on the store I don't find the current navigational system a lacking.

What I do find particularly crap is the experience delivered when you get to a destination product info page. If Sony's wanting me to part with my money, it should provide some decent descriptive text (i.e. not the rubbish PR blurb currently offered), some screen shots of the game/pack/map and also a gameplay video - and I don't mean several hundred megabytes for 60 seconds of HD video, but an in-page streamed video that gives me a taste of what I'll get.

look's nice, doubt anyone will notice the lack of updates since all we ever seem to get is 1 - 3 items a week compared to the US's whole page and a bit a week

True, they probably are just trying to make up for a lack of content.

What I also want to see is less about the backwards "genre" mentality, and more about "putting up a quality game because it's actually good."

There is one good thing, though - if content updates/patches end up taking off successfully, there'll be less chance to produce sequels/remakes, and better new games.

What? A baking powder? You're a loony...you mean more broken games coming to market in need of patches before they're even what I'd consider salable.
