Coca-Cola's Grand Theft Auto Cash-In - Again

Why keep an old ad down?

Back in August 2006 advertising directors, Smith and Faulkes produced a Cannes Golden Lion-winning advert for Coca-Cola called "Videogame". Not only did it win that advertising award, it was also shown in the USA.

In June 2006, Rockstar produced the PS2 port of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, which went on sale in the USA.

Now, either time is circular and we're all about to disappear up inside our own mother's wombs, or Coke really likes GTA games.

Why?

According to the Brand Republic website, "Coca Cola GB is to debut its £2m integrated ‘video game' advertising creative on 3 March to promote its brand and communicate its ‘Coke side of life' theme across the UK.

"The 40-second advert will run for six weeks on satellite and terrestrial TV channels to capitalise on the increasing interest in video games."

On April 29th, 2008 Rockstar launches Grand Theft Auto IV, set in good old Liberty City.

In case you've not seen the ad - which, in another strange use of the word 'debut' - is already in cinemas - it essentially rips off GTA but shows drinking Coke can turn that nasty, horrid (lucrative) videogaming world into a pleasant, happy place.

We're not going to show you the advert here - it'll be everywhere from March 3rd. What we thought we'd do instead is lead you to another piece of Coca-Cola-related multimedia. This one features hilarious English funnyman, Mark Thomas. Be warned, it's much much longer than an advert...

Enjoy!

Do you real think we couldn't go to Youtube and type "Coca-Cola GTA".

or do you think that we didn't want to give free publicity to a company that allegedly condones the murder of trades union activists in south America, and decimates the water table in India? A company that only made this advert to increase their chances of getting free publicity from sites like this.

A company that is cynically giving the UK a two year old advert and calling it a debut.

Hiya,

The screenshot in the story actually contains a still of the ad agency's own copy of the video running. So, I did find it - from source and not Youtube.

But, what I really didn't want to do was to give Coca-Cola free airtime on SPOnG.

Anyway, Mark Thomas is funnier and more valid.

Cheers

Tim

We should actually wear the bleeding hearts of Liberals on our sleeves... especially that Nick Clegg, I find him unctuous.

Name changing, bah!

Snickers is Marathon.
Istanbul is Constantinople.
Altria is Philip Morris.
Catherine the Great (Empress of all Russia) is Sophia Augusta Frederika of Anhalt-Zerbst

...and always will be.

PS: Unless they were Liberal Oligarchs or Liberal Dictatorcrats before and then suddenly went all democracy-loving, they're still bloody Liberals... or maybe they're Whigs. Ah, I sod it. I need an Opal Fruit.
