This morning we reported on SCEE's latest PlayStation 3 bundle with its first-party games, which included a 40Gb. We reported our confusion and
said that Sony was going to report back on our questions regarding the death of the 60Gb PS3, as well as whether - as reported elsewhere - this was a new official bundles or merely advisory.
SCEE, as promised, has responded. Here's what we have been told, this afternoon:
"Yes the 60Gb machines have pretty much sold through now. We have made it clear from the outset that this was our intention to focus all our efforts on our 40Gb machine going forward.
"There was no press release on this as it is merely an offering between SCEE Sales department and retail. They are not obligatory, they are suggestions.
"Retailers can take this offer or - as frequently happens - can make their own. We press released the packs you refer to in your mail,
back in October of last year, as it was part and parcel of the new price positioning."
So, there we go - an advisory whereas 2007's press release was part of a new pricing policy.
It's also an advisory that advises retail to sell roughly the same pack at £349 in 2008 with a PS3 40Gb as the £349 pack from 2007 with the PS3 60Gb.
So, being charitable, the first announcement from 2007 was drop in price of the 60Gb from £425 standalone to £349 with two games - in order to shift the unit from inventory and clear the way for the more cost-effective £299 40Gb PS3. The new announcement is one that clarifies the pricing position for unit.
Being uncharitable we'd say that the confusion of a 40Gb (not PS2-compatible) bundle now at the same price as a 60Gb (PS2-compatible) bundle was in 2007 is incredibly poor planning - it looks like a drop in value. You would have expected Sony's central planning bods to have predicted this when they introduced the £349 pricing in October.
Let's hope this new advisory finally clarifies PS3 pricing across the UK retail world and for consumers.
