New PS3 Bundle: Pick'n'Mix-Up? 60Gb Dead?

40Gb replaces 60Gb in 'new bundle'

New PS3 Bundle: Pick'n'Mix-Up? 60Gb Dead?
So, news of a "Pick'N'Mix" PlayStation 3 bundle for £349.99 has hit the wires - however, we feel that we've seen it before but with one major difference - the 40Gb PS3 replaces the 60Gb for the same price as the pick'n'mix bundle from October 2007.

As far as we can make out then, this means that supply of 60Gb PS3s has finally dried up. Here's how we come to that conclusion.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) in a mail to SPOnG today the new bundle is:

"40GB PS3 with 2 games from the list below for £349.99 from January 18th.

MotorStorm
Resistance: Fall of Man
Genji:Days of the Blade
Formula 1
Ridge Racer 7
Heavenly Sword
Lair
Folklore
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Warhawk + headset
Uncharted Drakes Fortune
SingStar + Mics

So, a 40Gb PS3 with two first-party games - sounds good. Especially with the the addition of SingStar and microphones and Warhawk with its headset.

All and well and good we thought, and then we re-read a story based on an SCEE statement from October 5th last year. Within the story was the paragraph:

"Sony Computer Entertainment UK (SCEUK) today announced details of two new PLAYSTATION3 (PS3) packs that will be launched on 10th October 2007. The existing PS3 Starter Pack will be replaced by a 60GB value pack at a price of £349. Additionally, a new 40GB entry level PS3 model will be introduced at £299."

This was fleshed out with:

"The existing Starter Pack will be replaced by a new Value Pack featuring a fully functioning 60GB PS3 with extensive backwards compatibility, a SIXAXIS wireless controller and two first party titles which will be offered at a price of £349."

This was given more clarification on October 6th when Maguire, in a SPOnG interview, responded to the question, "Will people be able to choose which two games they get with the 60Gb version?" with the following:

"Where retailers can, that will be possible. They have a list of games from which consumers can pick and mix. But some retailers don’t have the ability to do that, so they will formulate their products and deal with two defined games. The retailers are thrilled, because this year had an amazing start. But this is our first Christmas with PlayStation 3, and it’s exciting to be going into Christmas with a competitive and aggressive price-point."

List of available games? 'Pick and mix'? Two defined games? All sounds exactly like the 'new' bundle. But hold on, this bundle contained the 60Gb version for £349, whereas the new bundle with the same pick'n'mix idea contains the 40Gb model for the same price.

Eh? You can already go along to, for example, GameStation and get a PS3 40Gb bundle with any game for £299.

At HMV, however, we priced a 40Gb bundle with Motorstorm and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune as £379.97.

The same bundle priced at Game came to £364.97.

Could we find a non pre-owned PS3 at high street retail? No we could not.

So, right now we're just confused. On the upsides: there is now an across-the-board clarification on the retail price for a PS3 40Gb plus two first-party game bundle - you should not pay more than £349.99; there are also more first-party games in the bundle than had been there in October (for obvious reasons).

However, we just can't shake that October 2007 60Gb bundle from our heads. We also think this isn't a bundle so much as it is advice to retail from SCEE. And finally, surely this is all simply confirmation that the 60Gb PS3 is no more.

We've put all these questions to SCEE earlier this morning and are awaiting a response - so check back for more as we get it.

If anyone goes into a shop and asks for Genji and Formula 1, they should have rocks thrown at them.

There are more blu-ray movies available for the PS3 than games hahaha.

Want a bargain and play tons of games and get HD cables? Get a 360 Elite ;-)

Well, since Amazon.com lists 523 HD-DVD discs and only 396 Xbox 360 games; there are more HD-DVD movies available for the 360 than games hahaha. Ooops, the 360 can't play them by default though can it? D'oh!

You are a f**king moron, sir. There are more DVD movies available than PS2, XBox and 360 games put together. Does this mean they all failed in their generation? No, it just means that in this world where most of us are living in, there are more movies made than games.

Want a quiet console that looks good; has loads of decent games now, with many more coming; plays high-definition movies without need of an expensive add-on; does not need an external power-supply; is reliable and not prone to over-heating and dying; has free online play without subscriptions to bleed you dry; has great media centre capabilities and is also popular at parties (SingStar, I am looking at you); and want to piss off 360-blinded irrational irritating pointless forum-ass SuperSaiyan4? Then get a PS3. Oh and a HDMI cable for a tenner if you really need one. Big deal.

Want a console that looks like a kid's toy, is noisy like a plane taking off; requires a giant power block to run; is unreliable to the point that many die and need fixing; has no in-built HD media format; a bulky, badly designed control-pad; monthly subscriptions for online gaming; and despite having a few good games (as it has been out for a while), very few titles coming out that actually look like they are worth bothering with? Oh, and no Metal Gear Solid 4, ever, despite what some deluded fools will try to have you believe. Then stay last generation, and go 360. You will make SuperSaiyan4 very happy if you do that. And I'm sure everyone wants that tit to be happy, right?

Idiot.

Want a True Next-Gen console with Blu-ray, Wi-Fi, True HD, great games, free online service that's lag free, internal power supply, all put together quietly and well built? Get a 40Gb PlayStation 3.

Want an Xbox 1.5 with DVD, games that feel like PS2 games with better graphics, no Wi-Fi in-built, not true HD, a dead HD-DVD add-on, charged lag ridden online service, external power brick, cheaply built that has to be sent for repairs every 5 mins, and crap hard-drive, all put together in a console that sounds like a jet engine taking off? Get an Xbox 360.

OK, thats just a lie. A bald-faced lie. PS3 might, might have a load, singular.

Loads? Nope, sorry...you are entering the realm of fantasy here.

Also, this is a single load of 'decent games', you damn your own position with faint praise, a single load of decent games...and very little thats truly spectacular and exclusive.

So yeah, nice try...

Why would I be when its providing me with full on Next-Gen entertainment? Its Xbox fanboys who are jealous as hell with the years PS3 line-up with the likes of Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet and Home, the latter two making PlayStation Network a Live killer.

And for the record, I love how Sony put Blu-ray into the PS3. I can now not only watch HD movies, but play games on one disk where the game hasn't been compressed like a tin of sardines.

Because you are yourself in denial over buying a piece of hardware that hasn't proven its money's worth yet? Besides, Next-gen gaming died in 2001, don't you know that yet!

Erm... No i'm not. It was well worth the price for Future Proof technology and, unlike the Xbrick, at least I don't have to buy pointless expensive peripherals (Wi-Fi adaptor, HD-DVD player, play and charge kit).

It has more than proven itself now and no, Next-Gen gaming did not die in 2001. The PS3 is the only Next-Gen console on the market.

I wonder by what defenition the PS3 is the only one. If you look at it purely from the game perspective it isn't (none are really since no one made Super Mario 64 kaliber game yet, except if we count Portal and Mario Galaxy and maybe Assassin's Creed for it's innovative free-jump system...i got it the next Super Mario 64 will have portals, free-jumping and gravitational fun! It's probably the next zelda-game) and from a clyclic perspective it isn't either (the DS and Wii are for introducing a new standard control method after a generation which didn't).
Formats don't count, other non-game related doesn't count (GAMEconsole do minde), maybe linear developments and adapting new technology into the gameformat. Should have to look into that.
