Q&A and project manager spills the beans... maybe

I can confirm that I will be off this rope sometime in 2008! Shocker.

The Internet is once again making buzzing noises, which could indicate that it's broken, but actually mean that in-game cross media bar (XMB) functionality for the PlayStation 3 has been 'confirmed' by Sony at CES in the United States.

It's being reported that a chap called Paul Purdy from Sony has gone on record stating that the XMB in question will be available for PS3 in 2008. Now, as far as we're aware, Mr Purdy was with Sony Q&A before rising to project manager on Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. That's not to say that he hasn't mentioned that he's been working with the in-game XMB while developing games. It's also not to say that Sony has 'confirmed it'.

Frankly, we'd be stunned if Sony had confirmed that there wouldn't 'be in-game XMB sometime in 2008'.

The point is that no one has actually quoted the poor guy word-for-word - although several sources are screaming "Confirmed by Sony". We've been on to Sony this morning to discover exactly when in 2008 we can expect the much anticipated and bloody obviously going to be here in 2008 in-game XMB.

Meanwhile we're wondering if Paul Purdy might like to get together with Sony's Network Operations Director, Eric Lempel to discuss what mentioning 'XMB' can do for your day.

That's nothing to do with Xbox Live at all. That's to do with the Xbox operating system which can cut into gameplay to make use of facilities that use Xbox live, and those that don't.

The best online system in the world is in fact, the Internet, because even the high and mighty Xbox Live makes use of the Internet to do its stuff. :-)
