The Charts: Xmas Tradition Smashed

It's like punk rock attacking the dinosaurs of gaming rock...

Demm you Xmas traditions!
Demm you Xmas traditions!
We recently went to great lengths to point out that if your game is Number 1 in what is elegantly described as 'Week 48' then you are likely to hold the Xmas Number 1 slot. Remember we pointed out that this had been the case for the previous four years? If not that piece of historical research is over here.

Enough of history because history has been thrown out of the window. Last week's Number 1, Electronic Arts' Need for Speed: ProStreet has been demoted one place and its mantle has been assumed by the unlikeliest partnership in gaming history since ever. Yes, SEGA's Wii-exclusive Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has hurdled seven places and is now making the Black Power salute from the gold medal position.

As far as SPOnG can see, that's an awful lots of grannies buying M&SatOG - because there were apparently no Wiis on sale in the UK last week (although we did see 24 down in Game at Woking).

Okay, so that's the top slots taken care of; who cares about Number 3 anyway? Who remembers the bronze medalist? Well, aside from Pyrros Dimas' parents (look him up!) Activision probably does, because its hyper Christmassy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (makes you go all warm inside don't it?) bounds up two places from last week. You can see what SPOnG's military man thought of the COD in this review.

So, all of those video games are, like, so last week - what of the new entries? Well, Wii exclusive, Link's Crossbow Training (complete with Wii Zapper) comes in at Number 27, which is just ahead of the PlayStation 3 exclusive, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (reviewed over here). Oh, and Pokémon Battle Revolution cutes and kids its way to Number 40.

Yes, that's it for fresh, new, young gaming blood in the entire Top 40.

Let's sack that off then and concentrate our energies on the Top 10. Here it is (last week's positions are displayed in brackets - there will be a test at the end of the year).

(6) 1 Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games - SEGA
(1) 2 Need For Speed: Prostreet - EA Games
(4) 3 Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Activision
(2) 4 The Simpsons Game - EA Games
(3) 5 FIFA 08 - EA Sports
(5) 6 Assassin's Creed - Ubisoft
(8) 7 Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 - Konami
(7) 8 WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 - THQ
(20) 9 Mario Party 8 - Nintendo
(9) 10 Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock - RedOctane/Activision

Not a bad spread of the traditional (COD 4, Assassin's Creed), the casual (Mario Party 8), the franchised (WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008, The Simpsons Game).

Before the Nintendo hardcore army gets too feisty, we feel the need to point out that the game that everybody and their uncle Jane was extolling for its utter brilliance (including our review, over here), Super Mario Galaxy, actually slipped one place from last week's Number 10.

Somehow the universe just doesn't seem properly aligned now.

What's to look out for next week now that the Number 1 spot is up for grabs? Not a vast amount really. With Greedmas nearly upon us, it would be bloody insane to get a major game out late. So... Disney Pixar Cars: Mater-National (or Doc Holiday (Wii) with animation to us), World Series of Poker 2008: Battle for the Bracelets from Activision (on... PSP).

And that's really it.

Oh, if you don't forget about The Orange Box for PlayStation 3 - and you'd be a fool if you did.

More chart fun next week... get shopping or your relatives will hate you and your partner will be won away from you by someone who gives better presents!

Really is quite sad that bland games such as EA(NFS it was number 1 last year, who are these people who buy the same crap every year) make it so well in the charts when great games like mario galaxy, mass effect or bioshock are tumbling out the top 10 (when's the last time an EA game won game of the year).

Would be nice to have a Nintendo Christmas no1, can't remember the last time we had one.

parents buying for kids, and you cant say NFS is bland (well you can as you have an opinion) as its just the same old for us seasoned gamers but any parent buying games will buy what the kids ask for and prob whats at the top of the charts as well, but as sonic and mario is kid freindly all round who can say no, certainly parents can see the Elspa 3+ rating can see the chart position and any sales rep worth his game badge will recommend it, the kids probly have put it on the list anyhow i know mine have they have it over mario galaxy!! although thats certainly will be under the tree, and gamers all over will want to own the first ever mario and sonic game so it cant lose( although next week NFS will probly be back at the top and make me look a tit!).

I think Mario and Sonic at the Olympics is a disgrace. I cannot believe that IOC would allow the Olympic games to be associated with Mario. The man is a known user of performance enhancing substances. Is this the kind of message we want to send our children? He's also well known for his cruelty to animals, him and his brother...enraging and then tormenting innocent crabs, among others. They're almost as bad as Michael Vick.

Boycott the Olympics!

Damn right! And if we're at it, let's boycott WWII, how can that great event be affliated with so many bland retellings, full with idiotic retards running around as soldiers. Or even better, boycott the Third Crusade! Who ever heard of waiting in line (circle, whatever) for killing anyone, you just killed the bastard, not wait your turn.

Hell, we should boycott life itself! Affliaiting itself with a series that churns out unnecassary add-on after another! Revolution i say, Revolution!*

*For contents of this revolution and proper implententation of these contents in existing society, please stand-by for the non-titled manifesto in working.

Naw dogg, an American boycott of World War I is the answer.

Wilson shoulda been all like "My name's Paul, and this is between y'all..."

Then, when Europe is exhausted and bloody, we 'liberate' the colonies, and invade Europe and make the French dance for our pleasure. I'm thinking we'd be able to remove the shock collars after a generation or so...get Nicky, Willie and Georgie to move into new quarters...say, Guantanmo Bay...its very nice there...Clemenceau and Lloyd, not so much...they get a bullet to the head.

easy there, creampuff, Roi don't swing that way.

Without the Paris Piece (as in England gets that piece, France gets that piece) Conference of 1919 going the way they did we could not only avoid WWII and all the crap that devolved from that...theres lots of other quagmires that we could have sidestepped...notably by giving the Vietnameese what they politely asked for (which wasn't much)...not carving up the Middle East to suit European goals (that worked out well didn't it, blokes)...now, we dare not even breathe "Kurdistan" for fear of offending the Turks, (who admittedly did us some solids in the Cold War) then, it would have flown...Hell, England and France couldn't even agree to equal rights for all men...would have taken all the fun out of colonies, having to treat the wogs like human beings, wouldn't it?

I'm studying history, that's why i said it made so much sense :).

The only problem with it is the russian surrender of 1917 and with it the surrender of large resource-rich parts of eastern Europe that the germans quickly turned into their farmlands to feed their war-machine even more.

Count in the fact that WWI was not a war of total destruction like WWII and the great possibility of germany taking over continental Europe after the Russian surrender. They'll probably have turned it into a huge productionplant for the German war machine very quickly, so the yanks taking over Europe at that phase would have been very hard-fought, especially with the yanks having a second-rate army (only the American navy was considered equal to any kind of European navy, all the other army branches of the US were considered second-rate compared to the European armies) compared to the german veterans and warmachine.

tru dat...I forgot how truly horrid the American Army was at the outset of our involvement.

I'll stick with my original plan, which was to stay out of it altogether.
