Make sure to get the feather duster out before you send your PS3 to the Sony menders' shop when it breaks, because it looks like Sony is not going to repair filthy, dirty PS3s.

Here’s a pic of a recent Playstation 3 that Sony deemed too dusty to be repaired under warranty! (How it was actually allowed to get that filthy, we cannot imagine).

Apparently, Sony initially claimed that the dust presented a threat to their technician's health, and that the owner of this filthy, faulty console should pay them $150 for the honour of having it mended.

Sony originally claimed that the pictures would not be released without a subpoena, though soon changed tack once the story was picked up by consumerist.com, contacting the dirty, filthy gamer to tell him or her (most likely him):

Thank you for contacting us regarding our Warranty policy as it pertains to the condition of your PLAYSTATION 3 console.

After consultation with legal counsel, SCEA has determined that the photographs of your console as returned to our service center are neither confidential nor private. Consequently, we may lawfully release these photographs to you. Because the photographs are not confidential, we may also release them to media who inquire about your recent internet postings concerning the console.

Regards,

Okay, some SPOnG staff have worked in technical support over the years. Some of us have had to deal with the CEO's son's girlfriend's brother's PC that was so encrusted in filth that the bloody thing simply died. Some of us can appreciate what Sony tech support means...

Good for Sony!

Working at Gamestation we always get peeps trying to trade in their filthy consoles! I cant believe idiots like folk out shed loads of money (or may be its a stolen console?) only to treat a console like that!...no wonder it broke down. At the end of the day if u treat ur console like that, u dont deserve to get fixed for free....(even if u did pay for ur console)

Well said.

The PS3 isn't exactly cheap like say what a PS2 might cost so to abuse it by having it covered in muck and dust like the attached pick is ridiculous.

My PS3 got dusty as I had not cleaned it for a week but it was a very small amount of dust nowhere near that image! In fact I would NEVER allow my PS3 to get anywhere near that dirty!

I like my PS3 as much its got nice hardware and has very good potential as a media device, also I like it when its nice and shiny :-)

I give it a clean when I can as it just attracts dust too easily.

I took out the extended warranty insurance scheme that GAME offered when I got mine, so if anything happens to it I get a new one...Problem is mines a 60gb...There is no way in hell I would want a 40gb.

I agree with Sony for not touching that shameful abuse of a console. Anyone who allows their property to get that neglected deserves everything they get. A simple clean of a prized machine goes a long way.
The fact that the fool sent it off in such a state only highlights the fact he is obviously an utter retard.

no one knows the full story here, to condem the person for having a console that dirty, there could be a good reason for it, although it would of been a good idea to clean it up before sending it to sony, maybe he/she had an accident to the hime which cause his house to collapse soley on the PS3? eithert hat or just a dirty bastard.

PS3 + Repair £449.99
PS3 + Mr Sheen £301.98

Ok, that ain't regular house dust. It's way too fine and "clingy".

It looks like plaster or brick dust. Dust like that will clog the dust filters and cause the machine to overheat in no time.

I think that the reason Sony won't repair it under warranty - neglect/abuse

I used to work in a service department for a power supply manufacturer, and I've seen some icky gear sent for repair - like a PSU that was used on a naval vessel and came in all rusted and encrusted with sea salt. In all those cases they were equipment that had been put the hard work - not sat next to lazy fscker's TV. I'd have sent that Ps3 right back with a "BER" ticket attached.

...looks like that thing was holding up the bad end of a couch, one of it's unofficial functions like playing games...

I wouldn't fix that either. If there's one thing hated universally, its product kept in a poor state. Gamers need to look after their stuff better, and clean them up before trading in or sending off for repair.

Still, it could be argued that since many gamers are male, they have little pride in cleaning themselves, let alone their consoles.

On another note, Sony could just give the repairer a mask and goggles, replace the ps3 casing and stop bitching about it.

They could, but why should they?

They probably don't have HasMat suits available for their service staff, and getting one for this special case would be inefficient on time and money. Better to tell him to buy another PS3, or pay for the repair.

But I'm with Gareth, they aren't really refusing because it's dirty, they are refusing because it has clearly been neglected, and the fault was probably caused by this, and not by a manufacturing defect.

If the guy had dropped his PS3 and smashed it, no-one would expect Sony to repair it for free, so why should they if it has been subjected to other forms of abuse?

When the pictures of the PS3 surfaced it should have raised suspicions in everyone especially when you remember that its been proved that the guy lied about how old the console was, how he looked after it and where it came from.

The fact that its now been revealed that he is an actor just reinforces my belief that this story is an organised smear campaign.
