Sony's CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, speaking in New York this week has admitted that the battle between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray disc storage formats is at a 'stalemate'. However, he has a solution - albeit one that could indicate that his company is working on some pretty amazing tech.
According to a Forbes report, Stringer,"believed there was an opportunity of uniting the two camps under one format before he became CEO, and he wishes he could travel back in time to make that happen".
Seriously though , the Welsh wizard is not admitting defeat (or claiming victory) in the battle. He is, however, downhearted at Paramount's move to the HD-DVD camp in August of this year. "We were trying to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount changed sides", commented Howard.
This comes as something of a shock for those of us who who believed that the disc-format war was a serious issue to all concerned. This is especially true for PlayStation 3 owners (or potential owners) who firstly had to wait until Blu-ray manufacture problems were sorted out, and then had to bear the cost, "It (the battle) doesn't mean as much as all that", is Howard's line.
Going out on an up note, Stringer did make mention that, as far as he is aware, the
PlayStation 3 " is the best-selling console in Europe after a price cut three weeks ago. In the U.S., a recent price cut has doubled sales", according to a Forbes attribution.
