Xbox Arcade Hits UK Shelves

Christmas hots up...

The Xbox 360 Arcade - reported on October 3rd - has hit the shops (or 'stores') in the United Kingdom. You can almost smell the Christmas blood on the festive carpet as the price war begins.

The Arcade, which is aimed at the 'family', will cost you £199.99 - some one hundred fewer pounds than Sony cut-down, 40Gb PlayStation 3. It becomes available to UK gamers on Friday 26th October.

That, as you might recall from looking at places such as GameStation, is £20 more expensive than the Xbox Core.

Microsoft is selling this to world as being, "the first Xbox 360 console to include five family-friendly games." It also... wait for it... contains, an "Xbox 360 Arcade... a wireless controller, an HDMI connection to enable high-definition output if desired and 256MB of memory".

Those family-friendly games are in fact, "best-selling games from the Xbox LIVE Arcade", these are: PAC-MAN Championship Edition from Namco Bandai, Uno, Luxor 2, Boom Boom Rocket from Electronic Arts, and Feeding Frenzy from Sprout games.

Stephen McGill, Head of Gaming and Entertainment for Microsoft UK says, “As European families gather together this Christmas, it’s the perfect time to launch a family orientated Xbox 360 package that plays games, video and music for everyone to enjoy.

"In addition to offering an incredible all-in-one package for families to get right into the fun, the Xbox 360 Arcade system features the industry leading family settings that allow parents to control what their kids are watching and playing, and we know how important that control is to families around the world.”

Which is spooky as hell, because, talking about the U.S. version, Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft says, "As families gather together this holiday, it's the perfect time to launch a new low-priced, high-value Xbox 360 that plays games, TV shows and music for everyone to enjoy.

"In addition to offering an incredible all-in-one package for families to get right into the fun, the Xbox 360 Arcade system features the industry-leading Family Settings, which allow parents to control what their kids are watching and playing — and we know how important that control is to families around the world."

That is what we call 'on message' with fantastic synchronicity.

This sub-£200 bundle puts Microsoft squarely in front of Sony - on a price footing at least. The whole family-friendly sell (we counted the word 'family' used seven times in a single press release) places it in direct contention with Nintendo's Wii.

Roll on the Festivities!

I've seen many people offended by many things on SPOnG - but this one takes the biscuit (or 'cookie').
