UK figures for PlayStation 3 sales - according to Chart-Track - indicate that either the roll-out of the new, cut-down, 40Gb unit or the fact that the PS2-compatible 60Gb PS3's end-of-life, have had a miraculous effect.
The stats for week one of the 40Gb unit's sales show a massive 178% surge in units sold by retailers to consumers. No firm breakdown of which of the two versions of PS3 has lead the charge - or, course, whether this was a combined effort.
In the event that the sales were lead by the £299, 40Gb unit, these independently audited figures would indicate that demand for the console was in fact being held down by over-pricing. It would also seem to show that PS2 backwards compatibility is not the enormous concern that many industry commentators had predicted.
On the other hand, if this surge is caused by European consumers attempting to get their hands on the last remaining, fully compatible, 60Gb units, Sony could have a sales issue on its hands once consumers are faced with only the 40Gb PS3 as their Sony console choice.
SPOnG has contacted Sony for comment and clarification (and, we hope, not too much smirking).
