Italian people celebrating as SPOnG brings news of a price cut...no, really.
Sony's 'Big Bang' news, which was expected to break or around October 12th , has apparently been broken already. Hear the screams? "PRICE CUT!".

Italian trade magazine, Gamestore reports that from October 10th Italian consumers will be offered a new 40GB PS3 for €399 (£275) or the PS3 starter pack which includes two games and an extra pad for €499.

We now only await the news from SCEE in the UK as to what the 40GB PS3 will be priced at here. SPOnG hears on the grapevine that the smart money is on £299.

More rumours of price cuts are coming in thick and fast - and from all over the world, such as GamePro in France and PALGN.com in Australia, with that site pegging the new 40GB model at $699.95 (Aussie dollars) with a release date of October 12th.

Whether the 40Gb model will be the memory-cardless model (numbered CECHG01) that was spotted over at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) - and initially reported over on simsexchange - or whether it's existing inventory is yet to be confirmed by Sony in the UK.

More on Sony's new UK pricing strategy the second we get it.

I have to laugh at this now who is the one confusing the consumer with different SKU's hey Sony? Also wasn't rumble last gen?

The Xbox 360 has many many games and better quality ones at that with better versions, better prices.

What SONY are in fact doing is to ensure they get as many blu-ray players into peoples homes...Even if they dont have a HDTV.

At the end of the day an Xbox 360 Elite for £300 with a couple of games is a better deal especially since you get a 120gb hard drive, a wireless pad that rumbles and is better, HDMI cable! Headset! and is fully ready to go online on the worlds best online gaming platform for consoles.

Its about the games, something SONY are failing to realise as to them...Its all about crap-ray which will soon fail.

HD-DVD FTW!

Wow, you sound really defensive, SuperSaiyan4. I guess this must be a really good move on Sony's part, then.

£299 is what Sony needs in the UK this Xmas. £279 would be even better.

2008 looks so good for games on PS3, so I might jump in this Xmas in preparation. Some of the stuff coming this year looks pretty good too, would be enough to keep me going until MGS4, LittleBigPlanet etc. come out next year.

gotta say, i'd pretty f**ked off if i was a launch buyer, thats a massive price drop from launch & whats really been out thats worth buying for it in between now & then???... smells like desperation to me?, & plus u'll have to shell out again for a rumble controller when they final to decided to admit they f**ked up & just release it!.

No not desperate no need to be, the 60gb model is what you need I mean think about it, say if your PS3 goes bust and you have loads of saves, how you going to transfer them without a memory card slot??

Sony only need 1 model on the market but what they do need is games, exclusives and a better pad. Also having their own PS3 headset wouldn't hurt either!

At the end of the day this year is fantastic for 360 gamers also same for next year.

I was looking forward to a few PS3 games but they are either not worth getting now like Heavenly Sword which is extremely short and other games that are now multi platform like DMC4. But the only games I want now are the FF and DBZ games.

So far Sony has proved nothing by adding blu-ray for gaming, the Xbox 360 might end up having multiple discs but then you have faster loading times and its not that much of a hassle to change discs anyways!

Anyone with half a brain and a PC will back up their saves using a USB pendrive. It's simple and takes a few seconds. There's also a "back-up" option that lets you back up your data to an external drive, e.g. if you want to swap out the hard-drive for a larger one. And they don't tie you to the branded models with a fixed capacity.

Sony only need 1 model on the market but what they do need is games, exclusives and a better pad. Also having their own PS3 headset wouldn't hurt either!

The games will come in time; and so the exclusives. But better pad? The PS pad is a far, far superior to the clumsily designed Fisher-Price-esque 360 nonsense pad. Sure, at the moment it has no rumble and that makes it inferior, but the overall shape and design is fantastic. I've been gaming for 25 years and the Dual-Shock 2 is the finest joypad I've used on any system. DS3 will maintain this superiority, and contain rumble. And it's rechargeable out of the box, without having to buy recharge packs and the like. And the buttons are a RIDICULOUS shape, and the lack of symmetry does my head in. My hands are pretty darned symmetrical, why is the 360 controller not? Because they tweaked the design slightly just for the sakie of being a bit different, in my opinion. It doesn't work half as well. As for headsets, Warhawk comes with a Bluetooth headset. I personally can use the Sony Ericsson bluetooth headset I use with my mobile phone. What's the problem in that? If they'd tied headset use to a specific PS3 branded headset they would give 360 fanboys more ammunition to flap their arms and rant about.

I was looking forward to a few PS3 games but they are either not worth getting now like Heavenly Sword which is extremely short and other games that are now multi platform like DMC4. But the only games I want now are the FF and DBZ games.

Played Gears of War? One of the shortest games I've had the misfortune to play. Get used to it; as 360 titles increase in graphical and audio quality in an attempt to compete with PS3, the games will only get shorter, or come on more discs.
And anyone especially looking forward to DBZ games has gone a bit wrong... great series but the games will obviously be terrible.

So far Sony has proved nothing by adding blu-ray for gaming, the Xbox 360 might end up having multiple discs but then you have faster loading times and its not that much of a hassle to change discs anyways!

Rubbish. Colin Mcrae Dirt, for a start, has faster PS3 loading times than 360 thanks to Blu-ray. This will happen more and more over time. And swapping discs "not that much of a hassle"? OK, try to convince yourself of that but you'll never convince me. As someone that got irritated slightly by the 3-second loading screens in GTA: Vice City, I would HATE having to get up, eject a disc, stash it safe and stick another one in, in the middle of a game... for some games it might not be so bad but there are MANY games where this will be a HUGE annoyance.

In summary: SuperSayan4 talks cobblers. I don't like be so unconstructive as to sit and tear apart what people have said, but when it's such biased rubbish as that, I simply can't keep quiet.

As for the 40GB PS3, I'd much rather save my pennies for the full-fat 60GB model... unless the 40GB is not missing any ports or features and I will have the option to upgrade it to a super, all-singing 160GB model in the future.

Well, I bought at launch and I've been happy with Motorstorm and THP8 that I bought then. Rub-a-dub, Blast Factor and Calling all cars are great fun on the download front. Recently I've had loads of fun with Warhawk, and of course I've been playing Heavenly Sword. Then I've been trying out demos of Ninja Gaden Sigma, The Darkness, Dirt, FIFA '08 and Sega Rally, but I decided I didn't want to buy those, good games though they may be, they aren't for me.

I'm happy that I've had my money's worth over the last six and a bit months, compared to the likely price drop that is. The 60GB starter pack's supposed to be 499 Euros, which is £347 ish according to XE.com, so I'd expect the UK price to be in the £350-360 range. I can handle a £65 charge for a few month's worth of use. That's about £10 per month by the time the price drop hits. Or about a game and a half if you want to think about it that way.

I'd also have thought my experience would compare well to the 360's first six months, but I can't say for certain as I didn't follow the games released in that time frame very closely. It certainly stacks up very well against my first six months with a PS2.

I know a lot of people might be pissed off by this, especially if they bought a PS3 yesterday, but people who bought at launch have had a while to get some gaming goodness out of their investment.

You clearly have your head soo far up Kaz and Kens ass your talking s**t.

The 360 pad is by far the best pad ever and the trigger buttons for a start are far superior.

You also dont have a clue what is inside the PS3 oh wait TEH CELL ITS TEH CELL!! OMGZ PWNAGE!

All Sony fanbabies are freaks they NEVER hold up a conversation with any valid argument.

The PS3 is a flop just live with it.

I'm not sure how you'd transfer your saves even with a memory card slot, if the machine was bust. But you could connect any USB storage to it to back up your saves to.

Sure, I know this as a 360 owner. But I know I also want a PS3, particularly for the 2008 games..2008 looks better for PS3 than 360, to be honest. (Not that 360's looks bad..but 2007 was 360's 'big' year with its really big guns, it looks like next year will be PS3's turn).
SuperSaiyan4 3 Oct 2007 14:58

Next year 360 has Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, Too Human, Lost Odessy and they are all 360 exclusives.

PS3 has MGS3, FF13 and GT5 well I think thats about the top top exclusives.

As far as multiplatform titles go the 360 is the leading platform for like 99% 1% going to Burnout 5 being the PS3 is the leading platform in this case - according to the devs.

Overall the 360 is the DEFINITIVE games console.

I am no fanboy I know what is the best for gaming and what isn't and I can clearly see past the BS spouted by Ken, Kaz and Phil Harrison along with the lies and delays and ports etc.

Saves are all to hard drive. Assuming it wasn't the hard drive that was bust, I'd just pop the drive into my new PS3 when I got one by warranty replacement or buying a new one myself. Exactly the same as with a 360 I'd expect.

Bentley, you are talking crap, friend. If Sony do push out this £300 PS3, its just another double negative. What you fail to see in the endless sea of Sony sku shuffling, is that there is nothing wrong with the PS3 80gb pack, beyond the dumb Sixaxis being replaced by DS3 soon.

Truth is, Sony don't want to take a hit and suck it up, by selling the 80gb model, in a similar £300 price bracket to 360 Elite. If they did this, I'd defintely pick one up for £300, but alas no, they have to be switching and cancel different hard drives. This is frankly stupid, and like someone said will confuse consumers to a bizarre degree. I'd prefer they fell on their sword and our mercy, by doing just this. It would speak volumes (one being desperation) but give fans the boost they need to buy.

Games getting shorter you say Bentley, that's exactly what happened to Heavenly Sword, even though its on a 27gb disc (a bit embarassing really, considering its suppose to be justifying all that disc space, and yes I know its not from Sony but Ninja Theory). Either that or a few normal dvds, the result is the same (and indeed, Halo 3 I know was groovy but short campaign wise. Who cares about load times in this day and age? This isn't the PS1/N64 days anymore. We have it pretty good so far.

No standard PS3 headset? That's quite shocking. Warhawk looks great, but if all the players can't co-ordinate their gaming through a headset properly, a lot of the fun is lost. Even Nintendo can learn here too and put out a headset.

In short, stop pissing about Sony. I still want a PS3. 80gb PS3 for £300, THEN you've got yourself a deal. Unfortunately, Sony are too greedy to do this, and prefer sku shuffling.

I'm going to say this slowly for the cheap seats!

You. Can. Use. Any. USB. Or. Bluetooth. Headset. You. Want.

Got a £10 USB headset from PC World? Use that! Got a bluetooth headset for your mobile when driving? Use that!

Why the hell do we have to go down the "must be made by Sony" route when all it'll do is make people pissed of because of the cost?

We finally have a console that gives you true choice (not just the "pay our prices or do without" choice like the 360 offers) in this little aspect of your gaming lives, why oh why should we want to throw it all away? If you want a "Sony approved" headset, buy the £40 version of Warhawk and get the Jabra BT125 that comes with it.

Joji wrote:

Sony is a company. Sony must make money. Sony can't sell the rig you want for that price yet. I hate to make car analogies, but just because I'd like a DB9 for the price of an MX-5, doesn't mean it's gonna happen.

If you are so blinkered that you can't see that the only difference is the size of the hard drive that you can change for yourself anyway, then you were never going to buy a PS3 in the first place. I know that there may be no card readers, but they add nothing to gameplay and you're all about the games, aren't you? And there may be limited backwards compatibility, but you collect old consoles (you were talking about getting a VitualBoy in another thread for hell's sake) so you'd still have your PS2.

When all of those issues are sorted out, it'll be that it doesn't come with rumble, or that it doesn't come with an HDMI lead, or that you don't have an HD-TV so what's the use, or that you don't like the shape of the controller, or that it's not a Wii, it doesn't have Halo, it's online isn't as good as a service that's four years older, or they killed the Dreamcast, or the CD rootkit scandal, or now that I've f**ked about for so long, I'll just wait for the PS4 and it all starts again.

If you want one, buy one, if not, stop whining. There will never be the perfect time to buy, just make up your mind and, as Microsoft says, "jump in". You never know, you might find out that there's some fun to be had.
