Sony Ericsson has thrown more weight behind rumours that a PlayStation phone is on the way.
Speaking to the
Financial Times Miles Flint, the president of Sony Ericsson, said of using both PlayStation and Bravia branding on a Sony Ericsson phone, "It's an area of possible future activity."
In fact, Bravia-branded phones with mobile telly functionality are already available in Japan on the NTT DoCoMo service.
“We need to make sure that it is a credible phone, and be sure we are justified in putting that identity on it”, Flint added.
Rumours last week suggested that the PlayStation phone, which apparently will be released in February, will not be PSP-branded. The rumours also suggested the device will feature motion-sensitivity - something the PSP does not have
†. That would mean, essentially, that the device would kick off an entirely new PlayStation platform.
Sony Ericsson has successfully used both its Walkman and CyberShot camera brands to sell handsets in the past. Incorporating gaming technology, it would seem, is just that bit trickier.
In the past Sony has
remained coy about the possibility of a PlayStation phone, but comments have run to the tune of "We haven't announced anything" PR-speak rather than any kind of solid denial.
In any case, PSP owners will receive some
phone functionality in the not-too-distant future in the form of software launched in conjunction with BT. The software will enable gamers to use the PSP as a platform for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) wherever a wireless connection is available.
As far as SPOnG's concerned it's about time Sony pulled its finger out and provided a decent gaming phone. With Nokia's new N-Gage service available in November the company faces a stiff challenge in a market it should already be dominating.
