Digital Tuner For PlayStation 3
Speaking to Kiwi-based Stuff recently Warwick Light, head of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand let slip the fact that the PS3 is due for a digital TV tuner next year.

"We're also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March in New Zealand) – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder", said Warwick.

The marketing guy was also in a position to outline the future for the PlayStation, pointing out "It could be anywhere between seven and 10 years before the next (Sony) console comes out, and to bridge that gap you need considerable technology."

He didn't clarify that, but did manage to slip in one of the more obvious statements of thin air we've seen this year, with the immortal, "The PS3 is designed to last until the next generation."

More interestingly, he also made mention of PS3 file sharing with laptops via DLNA (Digital Living Networked Alliance) support, which he says, "is sort of a sharing format between compatible networked devices. It means I can have my laptop, and my PS3 can wirelessly detect movies, or music, or pictures stored on it and stream it to my TV. That content will appear on the PS3's X-media bar."

Rounding off his speechifying, there was one final piece of sell with the kind of slip that might have committed, hardcore gamers foaming at the mouth, "It's not a games machine. Well (laughs), it is, but it isn't (laughs again). It's a future-proofed super computer."

So, now we know.
