Following our earlier story concerning a leaked email
regarding the August 1st launch for Sony's European PS3 value bundle, we received a phone call from the company's French Managing Director, Georges Fornay.
We had previously spoken with the recipient of the email, Mm Stephanie Colombo of Sony France who confirmed to us that the document related to the forthcoming announcement and that it should not yet have been publicly available.
The email was apparently sent from Vincent Sabin a buyer at French retailer Auchan.
Monsieur Fornay, however, had a very different tale to tell regarding the leaked email. He explained that someone on his staff had been told by an Auchan representative that, "His (Msr Sabin) email has been hacked and someone had written an email under his name."
"I did not speak directly to Msr Sabin, as he was not there", Fornay explained to SPOnG. When we pressed him on the pricing details - for Auchan's €599 bundle based on Sony's €514 pricing - he told us, "There is no truth in this whatsoever. It does not make sense. I deny everything."
We then attempted to contact Msr Sabin at Auchan to confirm that the French retailer's email system has in fact been hacked - but so far we have had no success. We will attempt further contact and report back.
We await the official announcement of a PS3 bundle for Europe at 5am on Friday morning. Of course in the event that this was indeed an email hack into a French retailer, and Mm Colombo's earlier assurance that the email was an official internal document sent to her prove to be mistaken, we'll absolutely run that story as well.
