More bad news for Microsoft today, following the earlier astounding revelation that the company is to
spend $1.15 billion fixing broken consoles, it also announces that it has failed to meet its annual sales target for Xbox 360.
Microsoft chief financial officer (CFO) Chris Liddell told reporters in a company conference call that they had fallen "slightly shy" of shipping 12 million 360s during its 2007 fiscal year, which has just ended on June 30.
The company’s initial target was to ship 13-15 million units by the end of the 2007 financial year. Still, Lidell claims that Microsoft is "happy with that number [11.6 million]" and that he expects its Xbox and entertainment and devices division to turn a profit for the 2008 fiscal year.
Following the announcement, Microsoft’s Peter Moore told an interviewer that, "On the state of the business, we feel really good about that. A lot of what we're going to talk about at E3 next week is about the games line-up, and we feel really good about our line-up, both first party and third party, and what we've got to offer this holiday.
"It is going to be a tremendous holiday," he continued. "Hopefully, people will recognise and respect what we've done."
