Speaking about the upcoming
Sonic RPG, SEGA COO Simon Jeffries has acknowledged that the Sonic franchise needs a kick up the arse.
Speaking in an interview about the choice of RPG specialist
BioWare for development chores on the project, Jeffries said:
“We recognized the need to revitalize Sonic and bring something new to the franchise. An RPG was something totally different for Sonic, it felt fresh and exciting. Knowing that we had the opportunity to work with a renowned developer like BioWare on this game confirmed that it was the right opportunity for us to now bring this vision to life.”
SPOnG wholeheartedly agrees with Jeffries. The next-gen release of
Sonic The Hedgehog felt rushed, confused and underwhelming. While
Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii was better, it hardly set the world on fire.
Speaking about SEGA's plans to raise the bar with the RPG, Jeffries said:
“Collaborating with the BioWare team was an ideal way to ensure that there were two solid reputations behind the game - the creators of Sonic and experts in the RPG genre. The SEGA internal team will continue to be involved in the project though to ensure that the spirit of Sonic and the Sonic franchise stays intact.”
Alas, anyone hoping for more solid details on the game - beyond the
sparse scattering of facts that came out of the announcement last week - will be disappointed for the moment. All BioWare's CEO, Ray Muzyka, would say was, “Without giving away too much, we can say that we will be using many of DS's feature sets and we'll really be pushing the limits of what the system can do, always striving to innovate in what we deliver, as in all BioWare games.”
