Rockstar Responds To Manhunt 2 Ban

Disappointed... looking for diverse stories... no backdown

Rockstar Responds To Manhunt 2 Ban
Rockstar, the developer of Manhunt 2 has issued its response to the BBFC's refusal to grant a classification to the game - effectively banning it.

Here's the response in full:

"We are disappointed with the recent decision by the British Board of Film Classification to refuse classification of Manhunt 2. While we respect the authority of the classification board and will abide by the rules, we emphatically disagree with this particular decision.

Manhunt 2 is an entertainment experience for fans of psychological thrillers and horror. The subject matter of this game is in line with other mainstream entertainment choices for adult consumers.

We respect those who have different opinions about the horror genre and video games as a whole, but we hope they will also consider the opinions of the adult gamers for whom this product is intended. We believe all products should be rated to allow the public to make informed choices about the media and art they wish to consume. The stories in modern video games are as diverse as the stories in books, film and television. The adult consumers who would play this game fully understand that it is fictional interactive entertainment and nothing more."

There is no mention of an appeal in this statement - however, it is unlikely that the company will simply lay down and see potential profit wiped from the bottom line. Stay tuned for more...

I really, really hope the BBFC see sense on this one. With movies like "Hostel II" coming to cinemas, Manhunt is not the worst example of sadistic violence at all. I'll bet there's no way to make someone's eyeball explode with a blowtorch in Manhunt 2 anyway.

They shoudl totally apeal, I totally want to play this game, and there's no way it'll change me from my current pacifistic self into some crazy chainsaw-wielding murderer, at least not in reality anyway. Killing people by cutting their balls off with a jigsaw is exactly the kind of escape that videogames are made for.

That said, maybe I'll be able to buy his game, seeing as I live in Ireland. Doubtful, but possible. If I get one copy, I'll get ten, and flog them to Brits on eBay.

That's right. You've got Captivity and Hostel 2 hitting the cinemas shortly and in their wake, this looks damn stupid. I think people don't understand that games now cover the horror and psychological thrriler angle. This is something the mainstream need to accept and adjust to. Unfortunately Rockstar will get it in the neck again, which I feel is wrong.

They make good points above and I hope their appeal is successful.

Double standards seems to prevail against games once again.

The Irish film board or whoever they are have banned it too now.

This is ridiculous. I'd even say let's have a new rating, 21+ or something, and make shops check your passport or driving license to prove your age (regardless of how old you look)... an "anything goes" rating... rather than some out-of-touch fossils pandering to ill-informed tabloid media stopping me, a grown, responsible adult, from indulging in my hobby.

I'm getting pretty pissed off at the increasing suffocation caused by this Nanny state. That will cause far more problems in the future than a simple piece of adult entertainment. Bring on the revolution.

Well, we already have the 18A rating for porn films, where such films have to be sold through licensed premises; wonder if maybe there could be some modification of that, where game stores could have you sign some kind of register upon purchase?

The BBFC are just a bunch of pensioners and do gooders that don't even understand the concept of games. People that want to get off on sadistic and violent material have an infinite supply on the internet, maybe they'll ban that next. I thoroughly enjoyed the first manhunt and was looking forward to this one very much.
In a democratic society like ours it should be completely up to the consumer to decide on his or her's entertainment,. There are a lot of sick puppies out there and i'm positive that this game or any other media will not influence there sick desires at all.
It's adult fun, for adults, people that buy this kind of stuff for there kids should be punished just like people buying alcohol and cigarettes for minors.
Unfortunately the gaming community is being punished again and again because individuals that commit crimes need something to blame, its ridiculous. I have played all videogames from cute platformers to violent bloodbaths, i am a family man, i have never commited a crime and can actually tell the difference between reality and a game.

I can almost gaurantee that part of the reason it's been banned was that they're trying to release on wii (which a lot of the general media see as being a "kids" machine).

If it was on 360 only (for example) i reacon they'd have passed it.

(just a thought)

Personally i fail to see why low polygon models of people commiting brutality is worse than watching real people acting it out on a 20 foot cinema screen.

I say they need to give it an adult rating and let it be.

Just stick warnings all over the box and on the loading screens etc about how violent this game is and that "no one should try these actions in real life, as only sick ***** and mentally unstable people would do such a thing in real life, and you're not a sick **** or mentally unstable human being are you? If you are then don't ******* play this game you stupid dumb ****. Go and watch the Care Bears or something" etc...

On the metro paper 2day on the front page they had this story calling Manhunt 1 a violent shoot 'em up!?..... that's not how i remember the game.... but considering how u kill people in the game, shoot 'em up's quite mild! haha, anyway this ban is stupid, plus this could be the start of them really cracking down on the games industry, once the court starts backing these stupid f**kers who knows whats next for the chop or what games will be censored & edited to suit these pencil necked tw@ts.

I find it disturbing that a game is banned becuase the violence is 'disturbing' and 'sickening' but any number of shooters where the violence is considered 'heroic' are let through.

I don't think that the bbfc understood the point of Manhunt, they probably just asssume that it's all supposed to be fun. Rather than terrifying and horrific and compelling all at the same time.

I personally felt a bit spooked playing the first game and I presume that was the point.

It's ridiculous we don't have a ratings body that deals exclusively with gaming. The bbfc is rating games, based on the Video Recordings Act of 1984...
