Sony has confirmed that its free Japanese PS3 download, Mainichi Issyo, can be played on the PSP via its Remote Play function.

The game involves interacting with Toro the cat, a Sony 'mascot' who'll purr, stretch and gobble up food you offer him when you take a spin on a roulette wheel. With that in mind, SPOnG's a bit dubious about slapping the label 'game' on the download. Indeed, the main feature is Toro Station, which offers up news broadcasts by Toro and his black cat pal.

While the playability is admittedly limited, the interactivity marks a step forward for Sony's Remote Play functionality. Previously the service, which recently got global reach thanks to the wonders of Wi-Fi, has only allowed users to access non-interactive content such as photos and music.

The primary concern for playing games via Remote Play is network latency interfering with timing. Basically, the time it takes for the signal from your button-press to get to the PS3 from the PSP, plus the time it takes for the images/sound to get back again could be anything up to a couple of seconds. A couple of seconds lag time, of course, is going to ruin your average game. The slow gameplay of Mainichi Issyo dodges the problem, but there are some mini-games that won't be playable because of it.

SPOnG had a quick word with Sony to see if there were any plans for remote play games in Europe and was told, “No, not yet.” The word “yet” certainly sounds promising to SPOnG's ears...

Mainichi Issyo is available exclusively through the Japanese PlayStation Store.
