Sony has just announced that it will release a PS3 firmware update tomorrow with features including content sharing, worldwide PS3 access from your PSP and upscaling for DVDs as well as PS1 and PS2 games.
Keeping in line with Sony's recent
multimedia push on the PSP, the update will allow PS3s to access content on other Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) enabled devices. In a nutshell, you'll be able to access video, music and photo content that's sitting on your PC without having to soak up storage space on your
non-80Gb PS3.In the same vein, the update will allow the PSP increased access to multimedia content stored on PS3s. Rather than just being able to access content such as photos locally, you will also be able to access them using a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet. So you've got access to content on your PS3 from anywhere in the world.
The other main feature of Version 1.80 is the upscaling of DVD and non-HD games. Now, with a compatible HD TV, you'll be able to see your old PSOne and PS2 games and DVDs in glorious 1080p. As far as SPOnG's concerned, this feature is the least exciting of the bunch, despite the trumpeting Sony does about it. It should really have been included in the PS3 to start with, and a HD TV will already do most of the upscaling anyway.
Is Sony any closer to owning the living room with the PS3? Answers in the Forum, please.
