Halo developer, Bungie, has struck back Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto following his churlish comment that he could make Halo last week.

Speaking in an interview, Bungie's head writer, Frank O'Conner, said:

“I just want to go on the record and say that Bungie is hard at work on a side-scrolling platform game featuring some plumbers -- I'm not going to say what their ethnicity is, it's none of anyone's business -- but we took that as a gauntlet, a sort of glove slap, and we're going to respond in 2D scrolling style. That's all I'm saying.”

Frankly, SPOnG's a little bit appalled at all this testosterone flying around. Isn't the ethos of the Halo 3 multiplayer beta that we should all be nice to each other?

Maybe, on Miyamoto's part, his appearance in Time's 203 most influential people of the year has gone to his head. He might have slipped from his one-time placing of Number 2 to Number 9, but he's still more influential than Osama Bin Laden.

The Halo 3 public beta kicks off its three week run on Wednesday. For SPOnG's impressions follow us this way. You can keep up to date on all the latest Halo 3 news and assets on SPOnG's dedicated game page.

Props for sticking it to the man Bungie, but when the man is Shigeru Miyamoto... I dunno. I don't predict good things.

Anyway, will be interesting to see what Bungie come up with. Unless it was one of their infamous sarcastic jokes and they're not actually making a 2D game. But then, they can't exactly make another Halo.

My mind's going all over the place this morning. I blame assignments. And lack of coffee. Even though I don't drink coffee.

It's a shame that even a development studio, like Bungie, could fail to understand that Miyamoto's statement was garbled in translation; his statement was concerning that he could have made a game like Halo/2/3/etc, but he prefers to try to come up with new ideas rather than be a "me too" kind of designer.

i dont think he meant it in an insulting way, but merely to point out that an all-american gungho scifi fps blockbuster is, creatively and business-wise, the easy/safe option. which it is

has anyone of note actually disputed his ability to make halo?

Miyamoto is and always will be WAY more influential than Bungie and any one of the Bungie team, in videogames. I didn't take his comments as a direct attack on Bungie ... he used Halo as an example of the genre. And I'm sorry ... Halo is stale. It's not offering ANYTHING above 90% of other shooters out there ... so he was right.... I'm not saying that Zelda is offering anything new at the moment ... except that Halo will never be as interactive as Zelda on Wii ... that's fact. I dunno ... I think Bungie is attacking to try and look cool ... and all they're doing is looking like little kids in a playground, hitting back at the parent or teacher. Who did it long before they did.
