Sony PS3: The Machine For The Next Decade?

Sony's Karraker peers into the future

Sony PS3: The Machine For The Next Decade?
The PlayStation 3 is still going to be a force to be reckoned with in a decade's time, according to Sony America's senior director of corporate communications, Dave Karraker.

Speaking in a recent interview, Karraker said, “...ten years down the road, when the PS3 is still relevant, people will look back and say that we made the right decision to include so much forward-looking technology in the box.”

“Ten years” compares to an average console lifespan of around six or seven years. The PS2's insistence on continuing to kick next-gen arse, however, suggests he might well be right.

Karraker also made a vague, PR-filtered statement about the possible inclusion of rumble in the Sixaxis, saying, “We are currently in discussions with Immersion on how we can incorporate their technologies into our products. No word on when that will happen.” It's nice to hear, but it is not quite confirmation of rumble and nor is it any more committal than Sony's statement in early March.

Karraker also threw us a tidbit on the PS Store, stating, “We were delayed on getting more third-party game content on the PS Store early on, but that should be ramping up very quickly in the next few months.”

Commence usual suspects forming an orderly queue...

It actually shows how backward thinking Sony are when they base their predictions on past experience.

They're relying on the ps2 to coast through the beginning of their first few ps3 years but fail to take into account that the situation won't be a repeat.
Frankly all it takes is for microsoft to release another Xbox in oh say, three and a half years time to totally scupper Sony's plans. This is of course only if it is equal in price to the discounted ps3.

No one liked the PS2 when it first launched, but PSOne owners bought it as a future investment and played their PSOne games on it with upgraded graphics.

I remember Devil May Cry surprised us all, by being the very first good PS2 game. I remember almost choking in disbelief that there was finally a good game available for PS2.

Even still, sales of PS2 didn't pick up until Metal Gear Solid arrived on the platform - THEN, the PS2 established itself. Having said that - Sega was the only competition at the time, and Sega killed Dreamcast themselves, so....

I do feel like I've seen this all before though... only difference is stronger competition. But I still believe PS3 will grow in prominence over the next year or so, and will acquire a lead over it's rivals. The margin will just be more modest this time round I believe, as X360 and Wii attempt to close the gap.

What gap? You mean the 2 to 1 gap the Wii has towards the PS3 in Japan or the 3 to 1 gap the Xbox360 has in the US? Why would MS and Nintendo ever want to close those gaps?

Let's stay real, the PS3 is only a real contender if it dropped in price by 200 euro's at least.

Optimus, I agree with you. PS3 is sweet but Sony aren't sure what to do now.

I just don't see Nintendo and MS losing that lead. Many said PSP would catch DS up but it still hasn't recovered from it late start and lack of good games in comparison.

In this round Xbox Live is MS's trump card. Wii has the casuals with money and unique games.

The Wii, well it is outselling everyone......but still getting beat by the PS2. The PS3, even though everyone is complaining about it's price is still doing better then the Xbox360 when it launched. People are comparing the sales of the Xbox360 (total units) to the PS3 when the PS3 barely because available to the world. It did very well in Europe, solid in Japan, and solid in the US as well when you consider how much more it costs. Sony has the PS2 to bail them out of money problems, and the PS3 to pick up and take off when more games are coming out. Blu-Ray also seem to be winning the war, and that would also mean plenty of money to come once the format wars are over. It would be kinda funny of MS had to drop a Blu-Ray drive into their Xbox.......and it will happen.

People are buying HDTV's and the Wii's graphics are horrible. It's life will not last long based on that alone. I got bored of it after the first couple months.

And your opinion is a direct reflection of the entire world's populous...

Right... go pull your head out of your ass and smell the silicon. Until Sony can gain some ground they will remain in last place, regardless of release time frames. It's a company's own fault if they can't get their house in order and release broadly while being plentiful.

Numbers don't lie...

with the elite and hd-dvd add on there is no reason to need a blu ray player since 120 gigs is enough to download movies and shows plus hd-dvd can support the other features, the ds vs psp has the same horible graphics / screen resolution / storage capacity problems yet is selling 9:1 software wise and 2.5:1 hardware wise. so really the era of graphics = success ended with the ds. lastly zelda for the nes is the most played game on the psp.

Jeremy you are in denial.

Right off the bat PS3,s graphics equaled and in most cases exceeded the quality of the xbox 360 graphics. This was the ps3 at its worst as a newbie console. Yet the smoothness of the pixels on the ps3 outclassed xbox,s newest releases after being on the market for a full year.

ps3 is so much better technically, and quality wise it is not even close. However is interesting that most xbox fan boys seem to gloss over these details.

Here,s the punch line - xbox 360 games are now at their pinnacle, PS3 lowest quality, in 1 year from now PS3 games are going to make the xbox 360 look like a Wii.

P.s. xbox live is a super rip off, so I hope you are happy using the most expensive console solution in the world today, even though it is not close to being the best.

People buy HDTV's because HD comes integrated in them nowadays, not neccessarily because they want or even know about that technology.

You have to look at the take up of Sky's HD set-top box or Virgin medias set top box to see the general consensus.

Aaah, where are the days that Sony fanboys screamed "it's all about the gameplay!". Good thing the DS and Wii lanched and are selling so good, it rebukes their "omg great graphics rulez your ass!!" arguments in the next lower dimensions.

Beisdes, graphics have been split into two categories these days anyway. One being the technical side and the other the artistic side, and just to be clear, better artwork beats better technology any time of the day because of its higher engrossing value.

Example: Oblivion, great technology but lacking in artstyle and so in personality. Zelda TP, lacking in technology but a ass-whooping artistic tour de force from Nintendo. Half-Life2, great technology but also not losing sight of the artistic side by adding a lot of sublety. Puts every better technical looking game (but somehow everything looks like plastic...hmmm) for shame.

And it's not that the Wii has been outsold by the PS2 only in the US and only in the month of March (thank you God of War II) it's suddenly been outsold constantly by the PS2.

"Oblivion, great technology but lacking in artstyle and so in personality"

How can you say that when all artistic backgrounds and textures upon everything was hand done?

Because the makers of Oblivion work from a certain objective: creating a fantasy world that lookes believable and that's the same reason why i hate some art decisions in the LOTR-movies: it's fantasy, what's "looking believable" have to do with bloody fantasy.

And so Oblivion looks like a game full of bland medieval towns, bland medieval weapons and robotic characters and what not in an attempt to be as "realistic" as possible, something the makers do not deny but openly strive for. Result, artistic blandness all over the board. And instead of making the enitre thing cell-shaded, which would rule so much, no, they even want to make everything more realistic in an attempt to finally get out of the uncanny valley...sighs
