The Financial Express of India is reporting a conflict in communication coming from Sony in Japan with regard to PS3 price-cuts.
Speaking in Tokyo, a Sony spokesman, Mami Imada, has apparently stated baldy that, "Sony currently doesn't have any specific plan to cut the PlayStatio 3's price.”
This quote was ‘supported’ – if that’s the right word to use for what is essentially a statement of the obvious, that "PS3 prices and shipment plans for the future should be determined by market trends and competition”.
This quote comes as
Ryoji Chubachi, Sony's president, said yesterday: "We are re-examining our [PS3] budgeting process in terms of pricing and volume.”
Neither snippet, in fact supports a short term change to the price of the PS3 anywhere in the world. In fact any official price cutting occurring too early in the lifecycle of the next-gen console will only add more confusion to the ‘perception’ wars mentioned by Sony CEO, Howard Stringer this week.
What is intriguing is that all of the statements come from Sony as the parent company rather than from Sony Computer Entertainment executives - suggesting that control and focus on PlayStation strategy has been shifted to the main boardroom.
