Speaking about the 20Gb PS3 to Japanese gaming 'bible',
Famitsu, a Sony Japan spokesperson said, "We're currently not considering changes akin to North America. However we would like to react flexibly with the market."
This comes despite Sony in the USA
stating that it will not be shipping any new 20Gb units to retail after the current stock has run out.
The continued sale of the 20Gb PS3 in Japan makes Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's (SCEE) position on the configuration more plausible. SCEE told SPOnG earlier this week, "We'll continue to monitor demand for the 20Gb model, from a consumer and retailer perspective... which will be factored into any future Euro launch plans." It maintained this position in light of yesterday's announcement.
Of course, the word “currently” lurks menacingly in the
Famitsu interview. Is there wriggle room in there for a quick withdrawal of the lower-spec unit from retail? Oh yes.
A statement such as “we will never take the 20Gb PS3 off the market” would be nonsensical. If Sony was planning to withdraw the model next week, a simple “no comment” would have made more sense than PR trickery.
But does Europe want it? Back in February UK retailers
said “yes”. Speaking to
MCV, major retailers such as GameStation and Amazon said that they would like to offer their customers a choice between models.
SPOnG will keep an eye on things in Japan and let you know if Sony does a U-turn.
