GDC: Mario Galaxy Vid!

Cosmic plumbing

Posted by Staff
Just about the only piece of news to come out of Shigeru Miyamoto's keynote at GDC yesterday was confirmation that Super Mario Galaxy will be out by the end of the year. Well, the Nintendo luminary was hardly likely to say something like that without a spot of new footage and some new screens, was he?

Since SPOnG's toes have been twitching for this game for longer than is healthy we've brought you the video below. Simply put: it looks spiffing. It's going to be interesting to see how the latest instalment will play, however. Leaping from mini-planetoid to mini-planetoid doesn't leave much surface area for the traditional running and jumping formula that has characterises the series.

Anyway, cast your eyes down the screen and look at the pretty footage and screens! And if you need more Mario in space then head over to SPOnG's dedicated Mario Galaxy game page.

That does look pretty damn cool, but I have to say, I'm just not as excited at the prospect of a new proper mario game as I should be... as I would have been a few years ago.

I think I'm just becoming an old fart. :(

It's good, but should have been a launch game.

Although I suppose that this is still the launch period, since you can't really buy a Wii still, in the high street (in the UK). It's disappointing.

I'm not sure what pissed me off more when I played this at E3 last...the control system (I YEARNED for a normal controller) or the stupid mini planet to planet hopping stuff. Very disorientating to say the least. Why constantly reinvent the game? People LOVED Mario64...why keep innovating when you've hit perfection? Mix that with a delayed launch and well...'meh'.

I completing agree, although at least this is closer to M64 than Super Mario Suns.. Super Mario Suns.. whatever that last game was.

This one looked mostly to me like NiGHTS, and didn't get me excited at all, although then I saw the planet based sections and it started to seem better again.

Will someone please just give me a videogame company and let me make the important decisions? I really could do it better than a lot of you.

Nintendo keeps reinventing Mario because the Mario-games (the real ones, not all of the spinn-offs) are the vehicle for it in Nintendo's eyes, reinventing the way you play and design games (what game has this kind of whacky leveldesign?).

Nintendo could easily just poop out Mario 64 clones every year, but would you be happy then, no.
