UPDATED: A Third of a Million PS3s at UK Launch?

According to Sony’s ‘semi-official’ blog

UPDATE: SPOnG just spoke with a SCEE PR rep who informed us that the speculation running on the semi-official Sony blog, Threespeech, as to how many PS3s the UK will see at launch is currently just that. Speculation. We'll bring you the actual official figures as an when we get them.

[ORIGINAL STORY]It looks like shops should be fairly well stocked with PS3s at launch with Sony’s ‘semi-official’ Threespeech blog claiming that around one-third of the promised one million PAL units are to be earmarked for the UK for the March 23rd launch.

The paid-for-by-Sony blog clearly states that as the UK market accounts for around 25-30% of European business, “We therefore confidently predict that the UK will have around 300,000 units at the outset.”

It continues, “…from figures we have to hand, we think this will amount to more than the combined number of Wii and 360 consoles that were initially shipped.”

Should this prove to be anywhere near the actual true figures being planned for day one, it’s certainly great news for both gamers and specialist videogame retailers across our glorious, green and pleasant land.

Are the PS3s glory days about to begin? See Sony! See! See how good news cheers everyone up! Make us write more of it now please.

We're going back to Virtua Tennis 3 for a bit which, by the way, utterly rocks! Despite the shocking lack of online play...

You should go play the 360 version then! ;)

That is a lot of consoles. But still to expensive, will 300,000 get sold...?

I've got a feeling that 300k will shift with no problem

If the UK market is 25-30% of a region that is getting 1M units, surely it will expect to receive around the 275,000 units?

Ain't it weird how when other sites speculate about Sony stuff, they get threats of excommunication, snide emails from Sony employees or threats of litigation.

But when threefaced writes lies^H^H^H^H speculation, it just gets ignored, and polite corrections issued.

And the story ripped down without a retraction notice, of course.

Hmmmm, 3'sPeach is known to be Sony's bitch - so it's not exactly credible... engineering a little controversy might be an attempt to guerilla market up some street synergy™.

On the other hand, Sony wants good press about the UK launch stocks, so letting it out on 3'sPeach and then taking it down is a good way to (not) announce as yet unsubstantiated (yet positive) figures in a non-committal way.
