Nintendo President on industry soapbox
In unparalleled move, Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi, has made some outrageous comments regarding what he feels are the problems in the videogames industry.

The Magic Box reported that in an interview with Japanese magazine Zaikai, Yamauchi said, “The game industry could shrink down to a tenth of the current size. There are an overwhelmingly large number of developers out there who know nothing about the business of games. Venture capitalists in particular. I think the industry will undergo a major shakeout from now to next year.” An easy comment for the President of a super-cash-rich games company to make.

As well as stating that gameplay should take precedence over aesthetics, a sentiment that most of us agree with, the Nintendo boss was outspoken on in-game movie sequences. “Games should have nothing to do with movies. Players get bored faster than ever before and in-game movies also jack up the development costs.” It is likely this is a slight at SquareSoft. Yamauchi recently stated that he had no intentions of ever working with the company again.

As well as making comments hinting that the industry’s move towards network gaming is to hide the fact that many people have no understanding of games, Yamauchi also lashed out at the PlayStation 2. “The PlayStation 2 is a well worth DVD Player, but not as a game console. It's too difficult and costly to develop for the system. It's a major obstacle for developers”. Whether or not these are Yamauchi’s genuine thoughts on the PS2 is unknown. The comments could be a ploy to up the anticipation level for the GameCube.
