The latest figures from Tokyo-based games research firm and
Weekly Famitsu publisher Enterbrain Inc. show that Nintendo's Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 two-to-one in Japan last year.
The Wii sold 989,118 units in Japan since it launched on Dec. 2, while Sony sold 466,716 PlayStation 3 consoles since its Nov. 11 launch, according to Enterbrain’s figures.
However, despite the PS3’s shaky start late last year, shares in Sony Corp. gained 6.5 percent this week, the biggest jump in a year, following recent news that
the company met its PlayStation 3 shipment target of one million in the US last year.
Sony still plans to ship 6 million PlayStation 3 consoles by the end of March after diverting laser diodes originally meant for its Blu- ray DVD players.
Evan Wilson, a research analyst at Pacific Crest Securities in Portland, told Bloomberg News: "It appears everything is on track from a supply perspective. Now, all we have to figure out is if the demand will live up to the supply.''
March is only a mere two months away. Are you planning on getting a PS3 this Easter when it finally launches in the UK and Europe?
