Travellers Tales has acquired Embryonic Studios in a move that will bolster its development team. The sale will put Embryonic under the TT Games Group banner.
Knutsford (Cheshire)-based Traveller's Tales was established in 1989. It's probably most familiar to you as the developers of the BAFTA-winning
LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game. It has also worked on the likes of
Mickey Mania,
Sonic R and
Crash Bandicoot.
The TT Games Group, however, is a newer beast. The group was formed in 2005 when Traveller's Tales merged with publisher Giant Interactive.
Embryonic, which was formed in 2005, employs 20 people down in Bollington, also in Cheshire, and is responsible for titles such as
The Privateer and its sequel as well as a host of high profile games including
Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone and
Looney Tunes Back in Action.
Debbie King, company law partner at Shadsworth based Farleys Solicitors who provided legal advice on the sale, said:
"The acquisition of Embryonic will enable Traveller's Tales to break into new markets and continue to be one of the main players in the computer games industry."
The "new markets" King refers to have not been specified at this stage. SPOnG contacted Traveller's Tales for comment but at this stage the PR folk are waiting for word from higher up the food chain.
Most likely they will try to penetrate more deeply into the all-ages market with the experience Embryonic has in licenses. Looking at their respective back catalogues, however, it doesn't look like they'll be breaking radically new ground.
